The Unfiltered Reality of Starting a Small Business in Australia 🇦🇺

These photos capture the raw truth of our journey opening Calico bakehouse. Behind every smiling post are hours of endless tears, sleepless nights on the cold kitchen floor, and days we wanted to lock up and walk away.

We’ve worked 6 days a week, just the two of us, unable to afford staff. We’ve poured our savings (over $100k!) into this dream. We even did most of the renovations ourselves.

But honesty? We’re exhausted. Mental and physical burnout is real. We’ve had to make the incredibly tough decision to move to 3-day trading to try and recover and heal. We love what we do, but we’re not sure if we can keep going in hospitality. This is for our health, but it feels like we’re losing.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Please understand this difficult decision. We need this break to figure out if our passion can survive the grind.

✅ Opening Hours Update:
• Week of Oct 8th - 11th Open 4 days
• From Oct 16th onwards: Moving to 3-day operation.

Pricing update ‼️

As many of you know, supply, ingredient, and overall operating costs have continued to rise significantly. We’ve done our absolute best to absorb these increases for as long as we possibly could, but to ensure we can keep maintaining the quality and standards you deserve, we’ve had to make some adjustments. 

Effective 1st October, we will be updating our menu and pricing. 

We genuinely appreciate your continued support and understanding as we navigate these difficult times.

8 months of Calico Bakehouse. 8 months of living our dream. 

When Sascha and I first started, we knew building something meaningful wouldn’t be easy. Navigating these economic times as a small, independent bakery has been one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. 

But then we look around the shop. We see tables filled with laughter, friends sharing pastries, and regulars who have truly become part of our community. Those moments make every bit of hard work worth it.

Sascha and I are beyond grateful to be a small part of your daily routine here in Abbotsford and Richmond. Thank you for choosing us, for spreading the word, and for keeping our dream alive. 

Here’s to many more morning coffees, fresh pastries, and beautiful moments together. 🤎
