Q118 does not have a marble score average of 38.

Despite what it says on page 7 of our catalogue, “38” was in references to how many carcases. His real numbers: 11.2 marble score, 465kg average carcass weight. 37 of those 38 carcasses paid top grid price.

Alex Hammond, CEO of Robbins Island Wagyu, called Q118 the most profitable bull they’ve used in their program’s history.

You always learn something when you go for a drive with someone…

This one came from Matias, who has seen big teams of bulls managed around the world. This is a South American idea, where a bull that’s dropped to the bottom of the pecking order can duck into the escape cage for a breather.

The low roof means bulls can’t jump on him. Eventually the bullies get sick of looking at him and walk off. It’s not fool proof, but it’s a bloody handy contraption.

Every morning we walk the paddocks of our containment feeding. Check the manure, check consumption. Sometimes you can see the cattle are a bit off.

What the Optiweigh does is quantify that for us.

One bad stretch with this mob cost us close to $15,000 in margin - average daily gain dropped from 1.2 kg to 0.7 kg over 10 days. You can see cattle are a bit are off by walking through them, but you can’t see what it is costing you.

If you are occasional containment feeders like us, not a professional feedlot, it’s a bloody handy tool.

Some very welcome rain followed by sunshine. A cracking June day. The rain has eased some of our acute water challenges and we're hopeful we'll grow a bit of grass, despite the cooler frosty mornings.

Good to see some very well bred F1s make $7.85/kg on AuctionsPlus this week. Light cattle at around 200kg, but worth noting because AuctionsPlus has been a tough place to sell Wagyu over the last few years.

Our view is that AuctionsPlus always exaggerates the trend we're in. In a period of oversupply it trades at a heavy discount to grid prices. In a period of undersupply it shows an inflated premium. We've been saying for a while that we're transitioning into tighter supply and higher prices, and this week is a clear indication of that.

In other news, we're just about to finalise the bull sale team for our September sale. Given the season they've been in confinement feeding, but they're presenting very well.

The impending F1 shortage nobody's talking about yet.

We've just posted an update off the back of the recent Australian Wagyu Association conference, a bit overdue, but I think the story has got more interesting in the weeks since.

Global demand is holding strong despite the headwinds. China is moving hard on the tariff quota window. And there's a real shift happening in what supply chains want from an animal, carcass weight, EMA and marble score rather than marbling at all costs. Good news for a well-bred F1.

But the one I keep coming back to, I think we're at the start of a genuine F1 supply crunch. Drought, reduced joinings, cow numbers down 60% year on year across key production regions. Feels very similar to the 2019 cycle.
