Radikon ➺ Slatnik Chardonnay / Tocai Friulano 2023

From 80% chardonnay and 20% Tocai Friulano, this is one of Slatnik Radikon's masterpieces, complex yet all pleasure. Time on skins and ageing in barrel gives it its unique character. It dances between tannin and acid in the same sip. Apricots, oranges, a lick of peach, and warm fuzzy awesomeness.

Allocation Alert ➺ Tolpuddle Vineyard, Tasmania

In the cool reaches of Tasmania's Coal River Valley, one special patch of dirt has become a benchmark for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Tolpuddle makes just two w**es, and their reputation stretches well beyond our shores. Precise, powerful and profoundly elegant, they're among the country's most coveted bottles.

Planted in 1988, the vineyard takes its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, six Dorset farmhands shipped off to Tasmania in the 1830s for having the nerve to form a union. Adam Wadewitz is the man behind the w**es these days, turning out Chardonnay with lovely citrus, flinty tension and texture, and Pinot Noir that's perfumed, finely structured and built to go the distance.

The 2025 releases have landed. Our allocation is tiny, and there's no second helping.

Baia's W**e ➺ Dry White Tsitska 2024

Georgia might be famous for its deeply amber, grippy orange w**es, but this is a much lighter-footed take. Tsitska spends a month on skins in qvevri, picking up texture and character without becoming heavy or tannic. Green apple and grapefruit, chamomile, a little cinnamon spice and that earthy clay-pot character underneath it all. Fresh, savoury and gently grippy, with a mineral, almost salty finish. Orange w**e, turned down a few notches.

Ochota Barrels ➺ The Mark of Cain Pinot Meunier 2026

The other Pinot. The Meunier one. Not to be overlooked, the late Taras Ochota always had a knack for crafting bright and electric drinking from this grape. And the team has delivered another beauty here. Florals and cherry, fennel and rhubarb with a tightly-wound minerality too. A savoury w**e with infectious energy.

On the menu this October is TZAKI's much-loved Braised Chickpeas from chef Alex Xinis. He's the man behind Tzaki, a tiny 16-seat Greek w**e bar in Melbourne's west, bringing old-school Athenian charm to Yarraville.

After nearly two decades spent cooking in some of Melbourne's best Greek kitchens and honing his craft in Athens, Alex knows his way around a Greek kitchen. Inspired by an old-school Athens institution, his slow-braised chickpeas have been a fixture on Tzaki's menu since day one.
