Vilmart ➺ Grande Réserve NV

From organic Premier Cru vineyards, 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay lay the foundation for this very balanced, very gorgeous and rather gutsy Champagne from the Montagne de Reims. Lovely citrus, red and stone fruit meet respectable structure and little bubbles, while brioche and almonds hit the creamy, toasty spot. Great value Champagne with the acid to age.

Allocation Alert ➺ Domaine Prieuré Roch

To be an estate in the famed Burgundy wine region is one thing. To be Domaine Prieuré Roch—well, that’s another. Since 1988, their approach has been uncompromising: biodynamic farming, whole-cluster vinification, native yeasts, no fining, no filtration. Just unadulterated expression of terroir — vivid, visceral and profoundly alive. Oh, and not much of it.

Now under the direction of longtime winemaker Yannick Champ, the vision remains sharp: make wines of unmistakable identity, with fidelity to both land and legacy. That’s exactly what brought us this latest vintage.

Shop Local ➺ We're Spoilt For Choice

Ask us what Australian wine you should be drinking and, well, you might be here a while. We’re pretty spoilt for choice around here. There’s an almighty amount happening in our own backyard, so why look over the fence when the grass is this vinous?

This week, we’re keeping it local with three producers doing very good things on home soil: Chalmers, pioneers of Italian varieties in Victoria; Sven Joschke, part of a new generation finding new ways with old Barossa dirt; and Frankland Estate, making the case for Pinot Noir way out west.

Pinot Noir, just not as you know it. 👀

It looks like a white wine, drinks like a white wine—but it’s made entirely from Pinot Noir. The grapes are pressed straight off their skins before any colour gets a chance to seep in.

Terra Sancta’s Mysterious Diggings comes out of Central Otago bright and textural, with white peach, mandarin blossom and a little peppery kick.

Very hard to find and currently sitting on our shelves. Not for long, we’d wager!

Vino Voyage ➺ South Africa Edition 3-Pack

Three-and-a-half centuries in, and South Africa still flies under the radar. We’re making the case for giving it a little more room in your wine rack. Some of the oldest vines in the Southern Hemisphere grow here, among ancient soils and wild coastlines, while a new guard of winemakers are doing very good things with all of it. Fresh and full of character, these are wines with history behind them and plenty of energy ahead. Consider this your ticket to the Cape.

We love wine; we couldn’t be clearer on that fact. But between more traditional drinks, we occasionally like to reach for a tangy citrus delight that is sake, a kaleidoscope of aromats that is Barolo vermouth or an artichoke amaro with wild thistle, lavender and bitter lemon.

Aperitifs to tickle the appetite and a digestif to sip slowly. Sherry, Sake and Mescal. There’s plenty to explore.

Tasting Bench Takes ➺ Jean-Baptiste Courdesses, Jean-Bouteille

Jean-Baptiste dropped by the tasting bench, so we put him in the hot seat for a quick-fire round of wine questions!

Originally from south-west France, Jean has made wine across France and Australia, eventually finding his way to the Adelaide Hills. These days, you’ll find him in the Basket Range making wine under Jean Bouteille.

For our latest Side by Side 3-pack, Jean’s picked three bottles that have stuck with him along the way. There’s Gamay from Beaujolais, sake from Japan and, of course, a bottle of his own.

Side By Side 3-Pack ➺ Curated by Jean-Baptiste Courdesses of Jean Bouteille

Winemakers are equally enthusiastic about the wines they craft as the wines they drink. Our Side by Side series offers a glance at what our favourite producers are pouring when they're not picking, pressing or putting their own wines to bottle.

This month, we're drinking with Jean-Baptiste Courdesses of Jean-Bouteille. His Side by Side 3-pack brings together his own Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir, a Beaujolais Gamay from longtime inspiration Daniel Bouland, and an old-school Japanese sake from the 345-year-old brewery where Jean once worked alongside the Terada family.
