I really thought this was it.

When we got the opportunity to bring Kaya Desserts to Henley Beach, we said yes immediately.

We rushed everything. Planned, packed, moved, and set up in less than a week… just to be ready for Tour Down Under.

We woke up before sunrise. Opened from 5am, hoping to catch the morning crowd. That whole morning… we sold 5 coffees. Five.

We stayed until afternoon anyway. Standing there, pretending it was okay. Then the rest of the week came.
Opening every day. Morning to night.

We brought everything. Our viral bingsu. Our best selling honey butter toast. The matcha and coffee people line up for in town. But here… it was different. Hours would pass without a single order. No sounds. No rush. Just silence.

One whole week of trading. Morning to night. Barely $2,000 in sales. We smiled whenever someone walked past. Hoping maybe they’d stop. Most didn’t.

You don’t realise how heavy silence can feel until you’re standing in it for hours.

You start questioning everything. Was it a mistake to come here? Was it a mistake to believe we could grow? But this is the truth behind small businesses. Not every pop-up is a success. Not every risk pays off immediately.

No one sees this part. They see the queues in the city. The sold out nights. They don’t see the mornings where you wake up early for nothing. They don’t see you standing there all day, hoping today will be different.

But we’ll still show up tomorrow.
