Welcome back, Willaba Farm!

Peter from Willaba Farm Farm in Murbko returns this Sunday with his much loved Riverland butternut pumpkins. If you spotted his little pumpkin cart at the market last year, you'll know just how popular they are.

These photos were taken earlier this season when we visited the farm as part of our Producer Guarantee inspections. We walked through the paddocks, saw the pumpkins growing on the vine and met Max, the resident farm dog, who was more than happy to show us around.

Did you know every butternut pumpkin begins as a bright golden flower? For those tiny fruits to develop, pollen needs to be transferred from the male flower to the female flower, a job carried out by bees and other pollinators. It's a beautiful reminder of just how connected our food system really is.

Prized for their rich golden flesh and delicious nutty flavour, butternuts are perfect roasted, blended into soups, stirred through risottos or added to salads. Better still, they store beautifully for months after harvest.

Peter hand-picks every pumpkin, no sprays are used, and he'll only be joining us for a short time. Willaba Farm will be here fortnightly for just three Sundays, starting this Sunday, so be sure to grab yours while you can.

And if you're looking for inspiration, check out today's market newsletter for some delicious pumpkin recipes, including pumpkin muffins that are perfect for lunchboxes.

30 Years of The Big Issue

Many of our regular shoppers will know Cindy, who has been selling The Big Issue at the market for many years. Whether she is indoors or outdoors, you will often find her making her way around the market with the latest edition in hand. She is very much part of our Sunday morning community.

This month, The Big Issue celebrates 30 years in Australia. Since 1996, the magazine has created opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, unemployment and disadvantage to earn an income and connect with their communities.

The special anniversary edition is a little bigger than usual, with 68 pages featuring stories and reflections from The Big Issue Australia vendors, interviews with familiar faces and a look back at some of the publication's most memorable moments over the past three decades.

And speaking of familiar faces, our very own Poh Ling Yeow from Jamface has contributed a laksa recipe as part of a special three course feast featured in this milestone issue.

If you see Cindy this Sunday, take a moment to say hello and pick up a copy. A new edition is released each month and every purchase helps support work that continues to make a real difference in people's lives.

Do you remember when milk arrived at your door in glass bottles, carried in a wire rack?

While home delivery may be a thing of the past, bringing home milk in reusable glass bottles is one small ritual you can still keep alive.

Every week, Fleurieu Milk Company brings fresh South Australian milk to the market, so you can bring back your empty Fleurieu bottles, refill them at the milk station, and do it all again next Sunday.

It's a simple change that can help reduce single use plastics while supporting a local dairy producer.

Sometimes the old ways still make a lot of sense.

You'll find Fleurieu Milk Company outdoors at the market every Sunday.

Imagine if every school, community group, sporting club and local organisation planted just a few more trees and shrubs for bees.

The impact could be enormous.

One in every three mouthfuls of food we eat relies on pollinators, yet habitat loss continues to put pressure on bee populations across Australia. More bee friendly gardens, corridors and green spaces mean more food for pollinators and stronger food systems for future generations.

The 2026 Trees for Bees Community Tree Grants are now open, with 40 grants of up to $500 available to help schools, Landcare groups, community organisations, sporting clubs and not for profits plant pollinator friendly trees and shrubs.

Since launching in 2023, the program has supported the planting of around 9,500 trees and shrubs and engaged more than 12,600 people in local action for pollinators.

We'd love to see even more trees for bees planted across South Australia.

Whether you're transforming an unused space, extending an existing pollinator garden or creating a new habitat, this is a wonderful opportunity to make a lasting difference for bees, local communities and the future of our food system.

Applications close Monday 20 July 2026 at 5pm AEST.

Find out more via the Wheen Bee Foundation website and let's get planting for pollinators. https://www.wheenbeefoundation.org.au/our-work/projects/community-tree-grants/

These are the hands that picked your oranges this week.

Meet Bill from B&A Andonopoulos. Along with his son Nick and wife Soula, this family works hard behind the scenes to bring fresh seasonal citrus (and more) to the market each Sunday. While Bill and Nick are out in the orchard and at the market, Soula is often preparing for the week ahead, helping keep the family business running.

It's one of the things we love most about a farmers' market. You're not buying fruit from a supermarket shelf. You're buying directly from the people who grew it.

If you're already a market member, thank you. Your support helps local farming families like Bill, Nick and Soula continue doing what they do best.

And if you've been thinking about joining, membership has just dropped to $67 ($56 concession), is valid until the end of January 2027, and includes 10% off your weekly shop and a complimentary jute market bag.
