From harvest to the next rotation 🌱

At the UMS Research Station, we’re fortunate to work closely alongside our sister company, Burlington Farming .

This recently harvested paddock of Torpedo annual ryegrass is now being prepared for AberClaret red clover, with the result shown here after a single pass using the VΓ€derstad AB TopDown.

A TopDown is a multipurpose cultivator, combining an intensive disc cultivator along with a robust three axle tine cultivator in the same machine. The 12.5cm spaced discs on individually suspended disc arms, creates fine tilth by cutting and mixing the top soil. The 27cm spaced tines then loosen and mix the soil and crop residues. In the final two working zones, the leveller and packer then concludes by ensuring an even and fully reconsolidated surface.

In the cab is Josh from Burlington, doing a fantastic job setting the paddock up for the next stage πŸ‘. Thanks for the help getting this paddock ready for what’s next.

A couple of weeks ago, the UMS Research Station welcomed RMCG Consultant Jake Gaudion along with a group of mainland Elders technical staff for an in depth look into the research, breeding and trial work helping shape future pasture performance across Australia.

With farmers facing increasing pressure around productivity, persistence and seasonal variability, conversations like these are more important than ever. The visit focused on the practical side of plant breeding and variety development, with UMS Director Stewart Sutherland and Research Station Manager Tim Smallbon sharing insights gained through years of hands on research, field trial work and on farm performance evaluation.

Following the visit, Jake shared:
β€œwe got a lot out of it - it was very different and unique to all our other visits and really appreciated the hospitality too! Also appreciated Stewart and Tim being so open with their thoughts.”

At UMS, we believe open industry discussion and knowledge sharing are critical to driving better outcomes for agriculture, and it was fantastic to have such a highly engaged group through the Research Station. 🌱

Massive Oats ready for their first graze last week at Western Sydney University.

Sown in late March, Mario will be aiming for 3-4 grazings before locking it up for silage and/or hay later in the season. Massive forage oats provide great versality in a mixed forage program due to their late maturity and bulk dry matter production.

Sown in March this year, this new lucerne stand is being managed to produce high quality hay for the University Farm.

Great to see strong germination and early vigour from the crop so far. We look forward to catching up with Mario later in the season to hear his thoughts on the performance of this variety in Richmond.

Massive Oats vs Yarran Oats on the 12th of May, sown 25 April in Condobolin, NSW.

We love a direct side-by-side comparison and the farmer commentary that comes with it:

β€œI didn’t think they would be this much quicker.”

Massive Oats are known for being quick out of the ground and fast to first graze, helping create early grazing opportunities and getting stock on sooner when the winter pinch begins.

We look forward to hearing more feedback from this farmer on how they perform throughout the season.
