Yesterday Sam and I attended the merino forum 2026. A great afternoon full of insights enjoyed by all merino growers who attended.
Definitely something everyone should put in their calendar for next. 🐑🐑

We have been pretty quiet on our social media lately. But it’s been all systems go here at Glenavon! Classing our ram lambs, and for the first time selecting out a handful to put in the shed ready to have on display at some of the field days this year. Very happy with how they are looking too! 💪🏼🐑 We have also made a start (for the first time) at DNA testing. Ewe and ram lambs all done so far, will also be doing a good chunk of the stud ewes when we have time.
Moving forward we will also be sending off our wool and growth data so that they can be processed into ASBV figures.
This has all been a learning curve for us. We’re looking forward to embracing the use of data to support positive visual attributes.

This year has been a very busy and exciting one for us at Aldersyde, both for Glenavon poll merinos and also our family. Back in August we welcomed our beautiful little girl Matilda into the world 😁 Charlotte, Hamish, Nicholas, Sam and I couldn’t be happier with the new addition to our family 🥰
August also saw us hold our first on property field day which was a massive success! Positive feedback from everyone that came and walked around has us very excited about the future and reassures us that we are on the right track with our breeding.
The BIGGEST news on the sheep front is when the opportunity arose to purchase Glen-Byrne Poll Merinos (over 60 years of poll merino genetics 🧬). With 500 ewes and 300 lambs making their way to Aldersyde, the uniform lineup was a true testament to Bruce and Carols love and passion to breed high quality merinos 🐑
We wish everyone a successful harvest and a safe and happy festive season. Looking forward to what 2026 will bring 😁🍻🍻

Thanks to Westcoast Wool & Livestock for supporting our first on property field day. A lot of work has been done behind the scenes which we really appreciate. Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and hopefully some new ones stop in for a look on the day 😁🐑🍻
