Greenhill Orchards Situated in the beautiful New England region. Greenhill Orchards (est. 1865) is a working family orchard, growing apples, pears and stonefruit.

Our focus, starting with healthy soils, is growing good fruit with great flavour, that truly nourishes. 'Greenhill' (est. 1865) is a working family orchard with a heritage of fruitgrowing in the rich soils of Arding, New England. Settled high on the Great Dividing Range, the distinct seasons are ideal for growing cool climate fruits, although there is always the risk of extreme weather. Luscious s

ummer fruits -cherries, apricots peaches, plums and nectarines are followed in autumn with the crisp, fabulous flavours of our main harvest of apples and pears. Harvesting fruit from November through May, apples are often available much of the year. These seasonal flavours are captured in our whole-pressed Pear & Apple juices.
'Greenhill' supplies fresh fruit and juice locally, working with fabulous foodie businesses. The orchard is also open for farmgate sales. The opportunity to source fruit from your local grower is a great way to reconnect with the seasons and the land. Enjoy a different pace and the flavours of the high country!

In the Orchard this week...
Sometimes you need to cut your losses, go back to basics and start again.
These young cherry trees have been under-performing, and so we have taken them back to stumps, and have re-grafted with more promising varieties. These fit nicely with other established varieties in the orchard for seasonality and cross-pollination. If the grafts take well, they have the benefit of an established root system to support good growth.
Here's hoping for some delicious harvests in a few years time!

Tomorrow, 2nd August, is one year on from the Big Snow disaster. This Winter, in contrast, has brought some big frosts, sunny days, and the sense that Spring might be a bit early, but not a single snowflake.
Today, like many other days, I was asked how it's all going at the orchard now. While holding deep gratitude for the genuine goodwill behind each question, it can be hard to answer.
In some ways, we have made incredible progress. What seemed impossible is gradually being accomplished, with protective infrastructure now in place over two of the three impacted orchards.
We've found innovative solutions to logistical problems around disaster clean-up and reconstruction, and many extra unexpected challenges. And proved 'necessity is the mother of invention'
The ongoing support and encouragement from community has been amazing! It means so much to be told that the food we grow, the work we do, and the land we steward, matters to many of you. And perhaps times of great loss or disaster prompt us to say what's important.
We have been given the faith, hope and strength to keep persevering, and we are so thankful 🙏
In other ways, this journey is uniquely hard. We are weary, and needing to dig deeper for that 'farmers resilience' after an unrelenting year.
Right now, it's hard to stretch to take care of all the seasonal orchard tasks while working on replacing major infrastructure on a deadline.
Disaster takes an emotional and financial toll, too, sometimes wondering what else could go wrong, (not a helpful question, a few extra things did!), and wondering how far we can stretch (usually more than you think). The process of trying to access disaster relief / financial 'help', exacerbated stress over many months, and like many others, we now carry the burden of extra debt.
So what is our answer to how it's all going at the orchard? Overall, we're making progress, we are thankful for so much, we are needing some rest, and we're working towards the future with hope. We can't guarantee the outcomes, but we'll do our best!

Backtrack Youth Works A good news story 🙂
Local Back Track Youth Works team legends have been giving us a helping hand with disaster recovery at the orchard. After getting in touch a few weeks ago, and a site visit to assess damage in the front paddock and Heritage bush paddock, a core team has been showing up each day over the last two weeks. Working steadily with chainsaws, stacking wood, sorting - so incredibly helpful! We are so very grateful for this amazing local support, particularly after all the work the team has already done helping others in the community with cleaning up after the snow. There were so many trees damaged and branches down, everywhere the snow fell last August.. . .
Its not only the practical work being done, while we keep on with reconstruction. Its also the huge encouragement, and the kindness and intention of young people choosing to give back to the community. So good!!
A huge and heartfelt thanks, we so appreciate all the help.

It's been a couple of weeks, and four of the eight side-cloths are now installed!
In this re-build, the east and west sides have hailnet, instead of bird net, for extra weather protection for the end rows of the orchards. We're planning to re-install bird net on the north and south sides.
A big job, but someone has to do it 💪
The focus has switched now to more work on the cables in the bottom orchard.
If you're local, a drive along Arding Rd will show that there's still a lot of work to get this remaining orchard structure back in shape ... But both the cherry orchard and Fuji block are looking almost back to functional, and the progress there is encouraging to see.

Farmgate CLOSED this Saturday 13th June.
Its time to have a mini break from clearing up snow damage, and celebrating a special event with family is a perfect opportunity.
We've been busy working to gradually clear broken paddock branches, along with net reconstruction. There's too much fallen timber to let it all decompose naturally, so we're building some strategic fires and gaining ash in the soil. A good job on a cold wet day 🔥
