Greenhill Orchards

Greenhill Orchards Situated in the beautiful New England region. Greenhill Orchards (est. 1865) is a working family orchard, growing apples, pears and stonefruit.

Our focus, starting with healthy soils, is growing good fruit with great flavour, that truly nourishes. 'Greenhill' (est. 1865) is a working family orchard with a heritage of fruitgrowing in the rich soils of Arding, New England. Settled high on the Great Dividing Range, the distinct seasons are ideal for growing cool climate fruits, although there is always the risk of extreme weather. Luscious s

ummer fruits -cherries, apricots peaches, plums and nectarines are followed in autumn with the crisp, fabulous flavours of our main harvest of apples and pears. Harvesting fruit from November through May, apples are often available much of the year. These seasonal flavours are captured in our whole-pressed Pear & Apple juices.
'Greenhill' supplies fresh fruit and juice locally, working with fabulous foodie businesses. The orchard is also open for farmgate sales. The opportunity to source fruit from your local grower is a great way to reconnect with the seasons and the land. Enjoy a different pace and the flavours of the high country!

Actions speak louder than words, and there's been plenty of activity in the orchards over the last three weeks! (and not much on the socials)
Interspersed with very welcome rain, work on installing and securing the hailnet canopy has surged ahead, and the orchard skyline is being restored.
Nearly 4 hectares, with clips every 15cm, the rows are long.....
It's taken a huge amount of work to get to this stage! And we're grateful for each bit of progress, and for all the community support along the way. This disaster recovery process has thrown up unexpected extra challenges, and also shown us clearly the difference each generous act and encouraging word can make in hard times.
Next challenge - installing all the side cloth!

Progress! Bigger machines, tonnes of net, and kilometres of wire...
And all that net needs to be threaded with wire, before being lifted to the canopy, and the huge task of clipping and tensioning.
We're thankful to have specialist contractors on the job, along with a hard-working orchard crew πŸ’ͺ

Raindrops on persimmons, Autumn colours in the pear orchards...
A grand total of 3mm rain at the orchard, so rare it's worth a photo! Grateful for every drop, and hoping there's more to come.
Warren's farmer philosophy - 'it always rains at the end of a dry spell'
The orchard trees are blazing with glorious colour, beginning leaf-fall, and slowing down to enter winter dormancy.
But activity in two of the orchards will be ramping up next week! Disaster recovery will continue after some extended delays, with netting contractors on-site to manage installation of netting roof over two of the three damaged orchards. 10 months in, this is exciting progress!
And there's a few home-grown Persimmons available now, for a short time.

R & R this Anzac Day weekend...
We'll be closing the farmgate for a few days, to take a breath after some challenging months, and to meet a new grandbaby πŸ‘£
Living with the seasons, we see the illustrative patterns in nature - fruitfulness and dormancy, growth and senescence, planting and harvest, productivity and rest. Our practise of regenerative and nutrition farming intentionally nourishes the soil, and orchard systems, restoring balance.
But farmers tend to keep going... although we do value our Sundays πŸ™
Harvest is now mostly done, the colours are changing in the orchards, and we're looking forward to a mini-break.
The farmgate will be CLOSED Friday 24th through to Monday 27th.
OPEN again Tuesday afternoon from 1pm.
Even a few days can be restorative, and green grass and newborn cuddles are good for the soul 🌱🌸 (Yes, we'll be driving to farmland where it has rained!)
After we get back next week, we expect to start harvesting Pink Lady apples, then pick up the tools on the bottom orchard repairs again.

NEW RELEASE!
Just pressed - a new season custom blend Heritage juice, made from apples grown spray-free in Tom's cider and heritage orchard 🍎 These little trees produced well this year, escaping the snow damage, and we have increased the amount of juice pressed - Heritage juice was very popular last year!
This seasonal batch features Yarlington
Mill apples as the base, a generous amount of favourite Golden Delicious, some Improved Foxwhelp, and varietal highlights including Sweet Coppin, Browns Apple, Sweet Alford and Bulmers Norman.
Each seasonal custom blend is unique, reflecting the conditions weathered over the growing months from blossom to harvest. And each year, we appreciate the juices pressed, which often delight and surprise us with the balance of flavours achieved. A reflective summary of the season we have just experienced.
Taste-testers are certainly enjoying the balance, depth and lingering tannins of this new Heritage juice.
Labelling now, and soon heading out to your favourite stockist :)

A special heritage... We are excited to introduce our very own apple variety, which we are calling 'Greenhill Seedling'!!
It is a seed from unknown parentage that has grown on the property near the fruit packing shed. The tree is very old, but the potential of this fruit for commercial production has only been realised in the past decade.
Supply is extremely limited, as we only have a handful of trees grafted at this stage, but we wanted to introduce the variety to the public and see how everyone feels about our special 'home grown' apple variety!
The apple is medium-large, with dark red skin, and some russet around the stem. Often odd shaped, with very firm dense white flesh. The flavour is a bold and exciting mixture of red apple, juicy lemon and fresh strawberry.
We can't wait to share this flavour experience with you all, and we are hoping to make grafting wood available this winter for all the budding green thumbs out there who would like to grow their own.
We can't think of a better place to introduce 'Greenhill' Seedling than at Seasons of New England, showcasing the makers and producers of our New England region!
And to round out the heritage tasting experience, we'll also have some Roxbury Russett and Golden Harvey apples from Tom's cider and heritage. orchard to enjoy.
We'll be there tomorrow, 28th March, at Stall 22, with plenty of pears, apples, and wholepressed juices.
Looking forward to sharing new season orchard flavours with you all...
