2022 Mt Torrens Ironstone - Nero d'Avola, Syrah, Sangiovese, Merlot from Mt Torrens, Adelaide Hills
A vibrant, delicate wine with purity, tension, and chalky acidity. From the top of the slope, defined by ironstone and quartzite. It is an example of how the grape varieties can be second to the boney character of the rocky geology. Hand-harvested and fermented in two lots (1: Syrah and 2: Nero+Sangiovese+Merlot) with 30% whole cluster inclusion and 10 days maceration. Aged in French and Hungarian hogsheads for 9 months and bottled unfined, unfiltered, with only 20 ppm SO2 added. 38 doz produced.
"A delicate and pretty little beastie. There are wild raspberries, bilberry and bursting pomegranate seeds spraying from their carcasses. Strawberry sorbet, shiso leaf and nettle. A sandy, rust metal character and hint of Moroccan spice. Acidity is cutting and sweeps across the palate like wildfire. Crunchy is one word, puckering another.
