Santa Gertrudis Australia A place for members and those who admire and appreciate the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed to converge and connect.

Comments uploaded to Facebook by people outside the SGB(A)A do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SGB(A)A. Necessity brought about the creation and development of the Santa Gertrudis breed of beef cattle. It was desirable in the eyes of those at the King Ranch, Texas, USA where the breed was developed, that other cattlemen should enjoy the benefits of increased production, even in harsh conditions that could be obtained by these cattle. Since arriving in Australia Santa Gertrudis have gone on to become one of the leading breeds of beef cattle excelling in the areas of crossbreeding, weight for age, food conversion efficiency and daily weight gain. Santa Gertrudis use a stringent classification system which ensures any cattle branded with an 'S' or 'S-' meet the minimum Standard of Classification and are accepted into the Association Stud Book.

The strong clearance and broad geographic spread of purchasers reflected continuing confidence in quality Santa Gertrudis genetics, with both commercial and stud operators taking advantage of a rare opportunity to access females from one of the breed's long-established herds and biggest Santa Gertrudis studs in southern Australia operated by the Daly family under the management of Matthew Way and his daughter Chloe and family.

The sale was conducted by Nutrien Stud Stock - Southern Region and simulcast on AuctionsPlus, with Colby Ede and guest auctioneer Innes Fahey calling the bids.

Strong competition from commercial and seedstock buyers across four states saw the opening day of the Kilcock Santa Gertrudis Major Female Reduction Sale deliver a solid result at Deniliquin, NSW, today.

A total of 101 of the 116 females offered changed hands to average $4000, with buyers attracted to the proven performance, fertility and genetic depth of the Kilcock breeding herd developed by the Daly family under the management of Matthew Way and his daughter Chloe and sons Harry and Tom.

Topping the first day's offering at $10,500 was Lot 97, Kilcock S33, a daughter of Canowindra PS from dam Bullamakinka Q99.

The standout female was secured by western Queensland producers Boyd and Mandy Curran, Tallyrand, Longreach, who emerged as equal volume buyers on the day.

The second-highest priced female was Kilcock S90, a Wave Hill Piano Man P84 daughter, which sold at Lot 88 for $9250 to commercial producers RJ and SA Connell, Dorrigo, NSW.

Sharing volume buyer honours were the Currans and the Western Australian-based commercial Santa Gertrudis operation HXA Pty Ltd.

The Currans purchased 16 females, investing $91,760 to average $5735.

Representing HXA Pty Ltd at the sale were manager Kieran Jennings and Nutrien Pilbara agent Daniel Wood, who assembled 16 females for a total outlay of $64,500, averaging $4030 per head.

The females will head to the operation's Chittering property, north of Perth.

Stud buyers were also active throughout the catalogue.

William and Jenny Crowe, Nungar Plain Santa Gertrudis Stud, Cooma, NSW, secured five females to average $3400, while Jack Courts, Glenalbyn Santa Gertrudis, Wellington, NSW, purchased Lot 11 for $3750.

Queensland breeder Andrew Bassingthwaighte, Yarrawonga Cattle Co, Wallumbilla, was among the strongest seedstock buyers, purchasing eight females for a total of $32,500 to average $4062.

Other stud support came from Tom and Anna Dunlop, Munnabah Santa Gertrudis, Coolah, NSW, who purchased three females averaging $4500, and Dennis and Gail Moxey, Denngal Santa Gertrudis, Forbes, NSW, who secured four females averaging $2875.

Following today's successful opening session, attention now turns to Day 2 of the reduction sale, commencing at 9am NSW time tomorrow.

A larger offering of females, including a significant run of younger breeding-age heifers, is expected to attract continued buyer interest.

The two-day sale marks a major offering from the Kilkock program, with the Daly family and manager Matthew Way presenting one of the largest cohorts of registered stud Santa Gertrudis females seen in decades.

Mr Way remarked after the sale that strong participation from NSW and interstate across Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia reinforced confidence in quality Santa Gertrudis females, setting the scene for another active day of trading tomorrow.

The sale is under the management of Nutrien Ag Solutions with AuctionsPlus taking the online bids. Colby Ede and guest auctioneer Innes Fahey officiated at the rostrum.
