Meet Our Local Food Heroes - from the August newsletter:
Ottone & Sons

This month we're celebrating the Ottone family, third-generation pineapple growers from Bilyana, just south of Tully.

Michael and Peter Ottone and their family have been growing pineapples in Far North Queensland for generations, producing both conventional and certified organic fruit.

We're very excited to have their beautiful organic pineapples at the co-op. Supporting regional growers like the Ottones helps keep our food dollars closer to home and strengthens our local food system.

Keep an eye out for Ottone's pineapples in store, sweet, tropical and grown right here in Far North Queensland.

A big thank you to the Ottone family for continuing the family farming tradition and helping keep organic farming strong in our region.

🥑 Enjoy them while they last! 🌱

We’re coming towards the end of our local avocado season, so enjoy these little beauties while they’re still here! 💚

It’s a great reminder of something we really value at the Co-op — eating with the seasons.

When we choose fruit and vegetables while they’re naturally in season, there are plenty of benefits:

🌱 Fresher & tastier – produce harvested in season is often at its best.

💰 Better value – when crops are abundant, prices are generally lower.

👩‍🌾 Supports local growers – we’re buying what our farmers are actually harvesting right now.

🚚 Fewer food miles – choosing local seasonal produce means less distance from farm to plate.

🥕 More variety – the changing seasons encourage us to mix things up and enjoy different foods throughout the year.

At the Co-op, we try to source local produce wherever possible, so what you see on our shelves naturally changes throughout the year.

And that’s a good thing! 🌿

So grab a few local avos while they’re still around — and when they disappear, we’ll look forward to welcoming them back next season. 🥑💚

Eat with the seasons. Support local growers. Enjoy food when it’s at its best.

Keeping Local Food Local – The Role of Logistics

Growing great local food is only part of the picture! We also need practical and affordable ways to get that food from our farms to the people and businesses who want to buy it.

Since the regenerative food logistics pilot began in September last year, the Atherton Food Co-op has been working alongside Sustainable Table, local growers and buyers to explore better ways of moving Tablelands produce around Far North Queensland.

Through shared transport, cold storage, and distribution, the pilot aims to make it easier and more affordable for smaller growers to reach markets across the region, while giving buyers better access to locally grown food.

For the co-op, being involved is helping us build stronger relationships with local growers and bring more good-quality, healthy local food to our community. It's also helping us explore the role the co-op can play in building a stronger, more resilient regional food system.

Building a stronger local food system takes all of us working together - growers, buyers, community, and those who choose to support local food. By trying new ideas and working together, perhaps we can dare to dream a little about what's possible for our region.

Are you a local grower interested in finding new markets for your produce?

The pilot is particularly interested in farmers using organic or regenerative farming practices, or those interested in moving towards more regenerative practices. To find out more, contact:

Strong local food systems aren't just about what we grow, they're also about creating the connections and infrastructure that help keep local food local.

Thank you to everyone supporting the co-op, our local growers and a stronger local food future for our region.

Recipe of the Month - from our July newsletter!
Following on from our farmer feature yesterday, here's a delicious recipe to try...

Lemon Bliss Balls

Ingredients:

1/2 cup cashews raw and unsalted
1/2 cup desiccated coconut
lemon juice from half a lemon
lemon zest finely grated, from 1 lemon
3 tbs honey or maple syrup
desiccated coconut extra, for rolling (approx ½ cup)

Method:

Place all ingredients into a food processor. Blitz until all ingredients are finely chopped and the mixture comes together.

Take large teaspoonfuls of the mixture and roll into balls. Coat each ball in the extra coconut.

Store in the fridge for a week. Can also be frozen.

We'd love to know if you try this recipe and love it as much as we do!

Jalamu Biodynamic Produce

Jalamu (formerly Jimbo's) is based in Jaggan on the Atherton Tablelands. Courtney & Jason grow a wide variety of citrus & other produce, alongside a herd of much-loved goats. For more information about Biodynamic Farming, check out who share resources and host events across the Tablelands.

Jalamu have been one of our main suppliers of lemons this season. Lemons are one of those humble kitchen staples that somehow make everything better. A squeeze over vegetables, into a dressing, through a pasta, into a tea when you're feeling under the weather, or simply added to a glass of water.

Seasonal produce often inspires us to get creative in the kitchen, and lemons are no exception. Call in to see us to discover what fresh, seasonal & organic treats are waiting just for you - then fill your basket with nature’s very best!

Big spud, little spud… we love ’em all! 🥔💚

Organic produce doesn’t have to be the “perfect” size, shape or colour to be perfectly good food.

So much fresh produce goes to waste simply because it doesn’t meet supermarket specifications. At the Co-op, we’re happy to celebrate our veggies just as nature grows them — big, small, wonky and wonderful! 🌱💚

Volly Spotlight July...

Our co-op wouldn’t exist without our incredible vollies - the people who lend their time, energy and spirit to help this place thrive!

Please let us introduce you to volly Laurette Lubbers.

1. Why do you think the Co-op is important to our community?

No level of chemical usage in food is ever truly safe, so consuming the cleanest possible food is a major building block for health and longevity. The Co-op's produce range, combined with its encouragement of local farmers to grow and sell these healthy foods, is what makes this shop absolutely the bees' knees.

2. What do you wish more people knew about the Co-op?

Our locally grown fresh fruit and vegetable prices are super comparable—and at times even better—than what's available at the large supermarket chains. Also, no matter how small your operation is, if your soil and growing methods are chemical free, it's likely you too could become a Co-op Approved Supplier.

3. What might people be surprised to know about you?

From living on boats, doing ocean races, competing in triathlons and a few ultra-marathons around the world, volunteering at music festivals, leaving a government management job, riding the sexiest Ducati in the world, and, as a vego, finding myself with a farm growing beef cattle... I don't think anyone is surprised by anything I do anymore!

Investing in the Co-op's Future

It's been a busy few months behind the scenes, with a number of exciting projects underway to help strengthen the co-op for the future.

We're delighted to have recently secured grant funding for the installation of a new solar system. This investment will help reduce our electricity costs, improve the long-term sustainability of the co-op, and allow more of our resources to be directed towards supporting our community.

At the same time, the upgrade to three-phase power is almost complete, providing the electrical capacity needed to support future projects as the co-op continues to grow.

We're also exploring opportunities to improve our food storage and handling facilities, including grant applications for a new produce cold room and loading platform. While these projects are still in the planning stage, they have the potential to improve efficiency, support local growers, and strengthen our role in the regional food network.

To stay up to date on the Co-op's activities, sign up to our Newsletter on our website. We send it out around the middle of each month and it's full of news, farmer information, recipes and more!
