Welcome to winter!! πŸ₯Ά πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨

We hope your farms and homes haven’t suffered any damage. 🀞

We’ve put in some mitigation measures to ensure the vans are well β€˜locked down’ to endure the strong winds.

2. Sweet TomTom, we are dog lovers (mostly), however this guy was super sweet (home delivery greetings). 🐈☺️

3. One two three, p*e! πŸ¦™πŸ¦™ They do everything together. πŸ˜‚

4. Now this had not only me but AI stumped! Not a sea anemone but the top of a fungus from the paddock! πŸ„β€πŸŸ«πŸ„β€πŸŸ«πŸ„β€πŸŸ«

5. Our youngest insisted that Zeus needed some time off - so to the dog park. He was an absolute darling - gentle and friendly 🐢πŸ₯°πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ (all the hens were ok when he returned)!

6. Pointing out soil improvement the hens naturally achieve. πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

7. We use these heavy β€˜harrows’ to run over the ground once we have moved the hens, this helps to smooth over the dust baths they’ve created and spread out their manure! πŸšœπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘

πŸ“πŸ₯š Earlier this week we welcomed the Year 12 Agriculture students from Investigator College to Back Valley Farm.

With a focus on biosecurity, the students arrived with plenty of thoughtful and relevant questions. They also rolled up their sleeves and helped collect the day’s eggs, as well as grade and pack them for sale. πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ₯š

Of course, nobody left empty-handed, with everyone taking home some egg samples to enjoy! πŸ₯šπŸ‘Œ

A big thank you to the students and their teacher, Nat, for visiting.

We were also incredibly grateful for the thoughtful gifts β€” six beanies, a plant voucher, and chocolates. πŸ’š

We love sharing what we do and helping the next generation of agricultural professionals learn more about farming, food production, and biosecurity.

9. We will have hens for sale - ready for pick up in July. πŸ“£πŸ“£

10. The OG packaging - still a fav amongst many of our customers. πŸ₯šπŸ³

Have a great weekend everyone!

We’re looking forward to getting stuck into a few farm tidy-up jobs over the next couple of days.

Next week we’ll be hosting some Agriculture students from Investigator College. Judging by the questions they’ve already sent through, we’re expecting a very busy (and very interesting!) visit. We’re looking forward to sharing a little of what we do and answering their questions about farming, hens and eggs. πŸ“πŸ₯šπŸŒ±

β€œHeard what?”

β€œWe’re moving.”

β€œβ€¦Moving moving? Or just moving paddocks?”

β€œNope. New homes. New people. Fresh grass. Backyard scraps. Tiny humans carrying us around like royalty.”

β€œOhhhh… one of those homes.”

β€œYep. Apparently we’ve graduated from commercial girls to family pets.”

πŸ“£πŸ“£ Seasonal Farm Announcement πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

As life on a farm goes, the seasons keep turning β€” and right now we’re about to head into our flock transition.

Our older girls are coming to the end of their time with us, while a new young flock learns the ropes of pasture life, laying in the nest boxes, mobile vans, green grass and coming when the feeders are being pulled (full) back into the paddock! πŸ₯šπŸ”

Because of this seasonal changeover, we will NOT be attending the markets again until OCTOBER.

Winter on the farm is a slower season for us, but we’ll be back in spring when the paddocks are greener, the days are longer, and the girls are laying in full swing again. β˜€οΈπŸŒ±

Thank you for supporting our boutique egg farm, our hens, and our family business. We can’t wait to see all your smiling faces again in October!

Random roll….

1. Alpacas are enjoying the fresh grass! πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸ¦™πŸ¦™

2. Every drop counts, small rainfall events, slow drizzling rain allows the soil to soak up every drop. πŸ’¦πŸ™

3. I’ve zoomed out to try and fit this Xanthorrhoea and flower spike into the picture! These are truly spectacular and a favourite of ours! πŸ‘ŒπŸ’š

My favourite way to have eggs is poached… but if I’m honest, they’ve been a bit hit and miss over the years.

So this little β€œpillow egg” method might just be the thing that makes the perfect poached egg every time.

Let me know if you give it a try πŸ‘‡

πŸ₯šπŸ₯š Pillow Poached Eggs πŸ₯šπŸ₯š

1. Prep your β€œpillow” line a small cup with glad wrap (or baking paper).

2. Lightly oil it so the egg doesn’t stick.

3. Add the egg, crack your egg into the lined cup.

4. Seal it up, gather the edges and twist into a little parcel (like a tiny sack). Tie the top so it stays closed.

5. Into the water, lower gently into simmering water (not boiling).

6. Cook
β€’ 3 minutes β†’ soft/runny yolk
β€’ 4 minutes β†’ slightly firmer

7. Remove & unwrap, lift out, let it cool for a few seconds, then carefully unwrap.

βΈ»

πŸ₯š Tips πŸ₯š
β€’ Keep the water at a gentle simmerβ€”boiling can burst the parcel
β€’ Don’t overcrowd the pot if doing a few at once
β€’ A tiny pinch of salt inside the parcel seasons it beautifully.

βΈ»

Still nothing beats a beautiful pasture raised fresh egg though. πŸ˜‰
