What a beautiful, and thriving nursery you have with loads of native seedlings. 🌱 🌱🌱🌱

We’ve been fortunate enough to pick up and plant more Allocasuarina trees on the farm.

With the recent news about Bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) being detected in WA and now suspected on the coast of SA (in wild birds) we thought you should know what we do on farm to reduce risk and disease spread.

Biosecurity on the farm 🐔🌿

At Back Valley Farm, our hens spend their days outdoors, so biosecurity is about finding the balance between allowing natural behaviour and protecting the flock.

Our key focus areas are:

🐦 Reducing wild bird risks — protecting feed and water sources, reducing attraction points, and monitoring the health of our flock.

👢 Clean in, clean out — dedicated footwear, hygiene practices, and limiting unnecessary movement through poultry areas.

🚜 Managing movement — keeping equipment, vehicles, visitors and deliveries from becoming pathways for disease.

💧 Water & feed protection — ensuring hens have clean resources while preventing contamination.

👀 Knowing our birds — daily observation means we can quickly notice changes in behaviour, health, egg production or mortality.

Biosecurity isn’t just a rule — it’s part of caring for our hens, protecting our farm, and supporting the wider poultry industry. 🥚🌱

Random roll….Winter on the Farm ❄️🐓🌧️

Although we are only just into winter, it can be one of the toughest seasons on the farm. The shorter days, muddy paddocks, frosty mornings and endless wet-weather jobs can make every task take a little longer. Gates get heavier, boots get muddier, and even collecting eggs can become even more of an adventure (think dodging rain)!!

But winter also brings opportunities.

The green feed starts to flourish, the paddocks get a well-earned drink, and the farm slows down just enough to allow time for planning, maintenance and preparing for the seasons ahead. It’s a time to check fences, plant trees, care for the land and appreciate the resilience of both animals and farmers.

Our hens don’t mind a crisp winter morning. They still head out to scratch, forage and explore, often looking far more enthusiastic about the weather than we are! 🐓💚

Farming teaches you to see the value in every season. While winter certainly brings its challenges, it also reminds us that growth often begins beneath the surface long before we can see it.

Today’s random roll is winter inspired….

8. Well let’s just say no one was out in this weather, including the the hens! 🐓🐓🐓😬🌧️

10. The farm overall always needs and appreciates the rain.

1. These 4 were loving the marshmallow patch! Hiding and weaving their way through. 🐓🐓🐓🐓🥰

2. Sweet TomTom, we are dog lovers (mostly), however this guy was super sweet (home delivery greetings). 🐈☺️

3. One two three, p*e! 🦙🦙 They do everything together. 😂

4. Now this had not only me but AI stumped! Not a sea anemone but the top of a fungus from the paddock! 🍄‍🟫🍄‍🟫🍄‍🟫

5. Our youngest insisted that Zeus needed some time off - so to the dog park. He was an absolute darling - gentle and friendly 🐶🥰👩‍🌾 (all the hens were ok when he returned)!

6. Pointing out soil improvement the hens naturally achieve. 🐓🐓🐓

7. We use these heavy ‘harrows’ to run over the ground once we have moved the hens, this helps to smooth over the dust baths they’ve created and spread out their manure! 🚜👩‍🌾👍

🐓🥚 Earlier this week we welcomed the Year 12 Agriculture students from Investigator College to Back Valley Farm.

With a focus on biosecurity, the students arrived with plenty of thoughtful and relevant questions. They also rolled up their sleeves and helped collect the day’s eggs, as well as grade and pack them for sale. 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾🥚

Of course, nobody left empty-handed, with everyone taking home some egg samples to enjoy! 🥚👌

A big thank you to the students and their teacher, Nat, for visiting.

We were also incredibly grateful for the thoughtful gifts — six beanies, a plant voucher, and chocolates. 💚

We love sharing what we do and helping the next generation of agricultural professionals learn more about farming, food production, and biosecurity.

We’re looking forward to getting stuck into a few farm tidy-up jobs over the next couple of days.

Next week we’ll be hosting some Agriculture students from Investigator College. Judging by the questions they’ve already sent through, we’re expecting a very busy (and very interesting!) visit. We’re looking forward to sharing a little of what we do and answering their questions about farming, hens and eggs. 🐓🥚🌱
