1. The hens are so curious and ‘mob’ us whenever we enter into their space! 👩‍🌾🫣 (no room for anyone to be scared or nervous around them)! 🫠😬

2. Racked and stacked - ready to be packed! 🙌🏽👌

3. A huge amount of rain has fallen over the farm over the past week. Making things do the paddocks extremely wet and boggy! 🥾🥾🌧️🌧️

4. Zeus getting some cover and becoming more and more chicken like. 😂🐶🫣

5. The equipment that makes collecting eggs easy - it’s all about systems and processes! 👩‍🌾👌😉

6. Chicken curiosity knows no bounds! Hitching a lift in the bucket. 🪣 🐓🐓😉

7. Asian Store in VH, stock trays and dozens. A lovely local family owned and operate this shop on Crozier Road. 👌👍👩‍🌾

8. You don’t often get to see my delivery helper - our youngest on holiday with me in Tasmania. 💚🚚👍

9. A bonus to being an egg farmer is getting some big eggs - these have to be doubles. 🥚🥚👩‍🌾👌

10. Our top dam, lots of sediment is still coming down the hill from our house build - however it’s still good to see the dam looking full. 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾👌

We are now back fully operational and have eggs galore and the stores are being restocked!

Why is there such a thing as world egg day?!? 🤔

It was created 30 years ago to raise awareness about the high nutritional value, affordability, and versatility of eggs.

Eggs are our business — so we know a LOT about the different ways and systems used to produce them.

We know what happens from hen to egg, what different production systems mean, and why the way hens are raised matters - to you, to the hens and the environment. 🐓👩‍🌾🌱

But there’s one thing we can guarantee when you buy eggs from Back Valley Farm:

Thanks to the Rotary Club of Encounter Bay for inviting us to talk about pasture-raised egg farming, regenerative agriculture and why looking after our land matters. 🌱🐓🥚

For us, farming isn’t just about what we can produce today. It’s about making sure the land is healthy, productive and able to be farmed well into the future.

Ever wondered what it’s like to be pecked by a chicken? 🐓🫣🤔

Well… are you a blade of grass? 🌱🌱A worm? 🪱 A bug?🐜 🐞🦟

Here’s a little POV of what it might feel like to be on the receiving end of all that pecking! 👀🐓

And yes, this is pretty much what our girls spend a good part of their day doing — pecking, scratching, investigating and generally getting into everything.

1. The chicken whisperer! Loving all the attention. 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓👨‍🌾

2. A little manufactured job… it was a windy day, so we were limited in what jobs we could actually get done. 🚜👨‍🌾👩‍🌾👌

3. Moving the vans onto fresh pasture at dusk. The night was still and absolutely perfect. 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾🚜💚

4. Give the kid with the worst hay fever the job of cutting grass in spring. 🫠🫠👨‍🌾

5. Prepping for a presentation to the Encounter Bay Rotary Club. 📚💻👌

6. Middleton IGA has been restocked with mini trays! Get them while they last! 🤩👍

7. Listening to an ABC podcast while hanging out with the girls. 🐓😂

8. Hmm… the chain has wrapped itself around the hose and cut off the water supply for the hens. Luckily, they have other water points to choose from. 🤔👩‍🌾

9. Jetty in Port Elliot has also had a restock of the mini trays. Grab them while you can! 👌🙏

10. Dirt eggs — the eggs the hens manage to lay in the dirt (or on the ground). Even after all our efforts to prevent it, it’s still an issue. Unfortunately, these eggs can’t be sold. 🤔👩‍🌾🐓😐

School holidays are here! 🎉

Looking forward to some lovely warm weather and lots of visitors to the South Coast.

The girl half of the family is also off to Tasmania for a week of fun! ✈️💚

Ever wondered what a day’s worth of eggs looks like… and how we grade them into weight? 🥚🐓

Here’s a little time-lapse from the packing shed, showing just how many eggs come through in a day and the process of sorting them into their different weight grades.

Every egg is candled, checked, weighed and stamped before it heads out to you.

It’s a pretty satisfying process to watch — and yes, there are a LOT of eggs! 😂🥚
