🍷 Calling All Chardonnay Lovers!
If you're anything like me, there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good Chardonnay.

For more than 30 years I've been making our traditional Reserve Chardonnay — rich, creamy and beautifully balanced. Since around 2000, I've also been producing our Foundation Chardonnay, an unwooded style that's become a big favourite with visitors to Bungawarra.

Both wines are made from fruit grown right here on our vineyard in Ballandean, and both showcase the distinctive character of our Granite Belt site.

To celebrate two very different expressions of Chardonnay, I've put together a special mixed six-pack:

2021 Reserve Chardonnay - $33

Premium fruit selected from our oldest Chardonnay vines, fermented in medium toast, French oak barrels to give a creamy, complex wine. Citrus & melon aromas & flavours are beautifully balanced by delicate toasted coconut characters from the oak.
This wine goes through two fermentation processes (primary and malolactic fermentation) in French oak Puncheons (a larger size barrel, around 480L). Malolactic fermentation is a bacterial fermentation that converts the more harsh Malic Acid into the creamy feel of Lactic Acid. Alongside this secondary fermentation, the lees are stirred daily to promote yeast cell autolysis (as mentioned in last week’s post), culminating in a rich and buttery Chardonnay that feels like home.

2022 Foundation Chardonnay - $19

An unwooded chardonnay with citrus, rock melon flavours and spicy aromas with a long and lifted finish.
This fruit-driven Chardonnay was fermented in Stainless Steel and allowed extended lees contact with periodical stirring to promote yeast autolysis, providing a rich mid-palate feel previously reserved for barrel fermented/aged chardonnay. This results in a luscious, fruit-forward wine with a long finish. The Fred Hollows Foundation receives $1.00 from each bottle purchased.

Bungawarra was one of the first Granite Belt wineries to produce an unwooded Chardonnay in a period when ‘no wood = no good”. A general improvement in winemaking techniques and a change in the consumer palate have made this ‘radical’ style a popular choice for most customers (including non-Chardonnay drinkers).

Cerinova - $29

A beautifully dry and aromatic blend of Gewürztraminer, Semillon and Muscat. This wine presents notes of delicate rose petals, lychee and lifted spice. An ode to a good friend, it was created to be enjoyed with loved ones. Best served chilled.

Gewürztraminer is the driving force in this blend, it is said to be one of the most distinctive aromatic varietals with strong lychee flavours and ‘spice’ notes. Famously, the grape can produce higher alcohol levels than other white varieties (14% is not uncommon).

Did you know Gewürz is the German word for Spice?
