Have you tried one of our Strange Birds™ yet? Rare varietals are flourishing at Ballandean Estate.

Ballandean Estate founder Angelo Puglisi planted his first Strange Bird™ variety Malbec in 1984. A wine pioneer, Angelo’s vision has delivered 13 new Strange Birds™ for the Granite Belt Geographical Indication.

While other wine regions are known for one or two signature grapes, the Granite Belt produces a unique range of alternative varietals. It's what makes our region one of the most exciting in Australia, and why our region's wineries banded together to surprise and delight adventurous wine lovers with the Strange Bird™ Wine Trail.

Last Saturday night we celebrated with the who’s who in Brisbane at the Starlight Children's Foundation Australia 5 chefs dinner. Our 2023 Shiraz Durif was paired with beef cheeks with braised beetroot prepared by Chef Cameron Matthews. Great to be involved in the fundraising for such a great cause!

Happy Queensland Day! We hope you are making the most of this glorious weather and enjoying some local produce and Queensland wine. We've come a long way since Salvatore Cardillo amd his daughter Josephine planted the first grapes at the Ballandean family farm in 1932. You can read our family story of wine pioneers here:

We are Queensland’s oldest family-run winery. Ballandean Estate blends the passion of five generations to deliver premium cool climate wines. Wine has been made on the Estate since 1932, while the cellar door was opened to the public in 1972.

Chief Winemaker Boxi Zhen cradling two of Ballandean Estate's premium wines, the 2023 Shiraz and 2023 Saperavi, set against a vibrant backdrop of red and gold on the Opera Block.

Even though our cellar door is taking a pause, behind the scenes, the Ballandean magic continues as usual:
🍾Perfecting the pour: We are actively finessing and bottling our current vintages.
🍇Prepping the vineyard: Our team is out in the crisp air, pruning the vines for the next harvest.

Cellar door re-opens on June 13.

Ballandean Estate's cellar door is closed for a short break. We will welcome you back to the tasting room and Barrelroom Wine Lounge on Saturday, June 13.

Even though the tasting room is taking a pause, the winery is not. Behind the scenes, the Ballandean magic continues as usual:

🍇Perfecting the pour: We are actively finessing and bottling our current vintages.
🍇Prepping the vineyard: Our team is out in the crisp air, pruning the vines for the next incredible harvest.

While our doors are temporarily closed, you can still stock up on your favorite wines through our online store.

Thank you for your wonderful support this season. We cannot wait to pop some corks and share our new stories with you when we re-open on June 13.
