Bowen Pastoral Company
Honesty and integrity are the foundations of Bowen Pastoral Company. With over 58 years and three generations involved, our principal goal is to maintain a sound, practical breeding program. Cattle are our sole source of income, and we are committed to producing functional, efficient, performance-
driven Poll Hereford and Angus cattle. We pay strict attention to fertility, carcase traits, structure, feet, and all the attributes that make each animal an easy-care, productive performer. The cow herd is the backbone of any successful beef program. Every potential sire is carefully evaluated for balanced, multiple-trait performance, with particular emphasis on dominant cow families. At Bowen, we do not focus on single-trait selection; our aim is to deliver well-rounded, commercially focused cattle. Our History
Bowen Poll Hereford Stud was established in 1963, with half of the foundation females sourced from the Peake family’s Middleton Stud. Early stud sires were selected from the elite herds of the time, including The Braes, Springfield, Kildrummie, Woodlands, Moorlands, and Sevenbardot. In the 1980s, the introduction of the Whattleview Baron line elevated the herd to a new level of performance and consistency. Stephen and Jodi gained extensive experience working in New Zealand, Canada, and the United States, studying cattle industries and sourcing bloodlines renowned for soundness and commercial focus. Following this, they established an Angus stud herd in 1995, with foundation females sourced from Barry Marshall’s Callen herd and the Mordallup herd in Western Australia. In March 2010, the program was further strengthened with the purchase of seven dominant cow families from the record-breaking Vermont dispersal, including donor dam Merrigrange Jestress V37, an outcross female noted for her depth, capacity, and consistently high-performing progeny. Breeding Philosophy
No stone is left unturned in the advancement of the stud’s breeding program. Bowen Poll Hereford has been performance recorded since 1968 and has participated in the National Beef Performance Recording Scheme (BREEDPLAN) since its inception in Australia. Cattle are managed in large contemporary groups, allowing true performance to emerge without aids such as creep feeders or foster dams. Feedlot traits are also a critical component of our selection criteria, ensuring that both Poll Hereford and Angus cattle meet the demands of practical, high-performance commercial beef production.
