Lyrebirds don't mind the wet and cold. Their mimicry is crisp and clear.

Anyone know what the bird is at the 15 sec mark or is it the lyrebird? Volume up

Not too shabby looking up into the tree canopy either.

30 years ago when we planted local eucalypt tree species, little did we know they would become critical sites to instal Greater Glider nest boxes.

The foliage growth shown in the photos is only from the last 6 years following the 2019/20 black summer bushfire. The trees took the brunt of the roaring flame intensity burning directly from the softwood pine forest across the road. So many old hollow bearing eucalyptus trees were lost including arboreal residents who could not escape to safety.

Through a Batlow focused Greater Glider monitoring and recovery program coordinated by Cherie White at , we now have additional nest boxes. This will help increase their accomodation options for safe breeding and survival.

On nest box installation day this week, Bess (as usual) turned up for the obligatory photo then left it to the experts, Mikayla and Liam.

Down the track we hope to bring you updates on nest box usage by Greater Gliders and other arboreal animals.

Some cool mammatus cloud drifting slowly over the orchard today while pruning.

After a day grading hazelnuts, grabbed the spotlighting gear to see what might be around after two rainy days.

The stars were out and a few micro-bats flying around. But, that's not all. Spotted across the road at the very top of a tall standing dead tree was a Greater Glider which had emerged from its hollow. That beautiful long fluffy tail was blowing in the cool breeze. Was hoping it was preparing to glide and, I would get to see this with a clear view. And.....

here is that moment to share with you.
What a magnificent animal.

Vehicles pass between these big old trees every day and night. Not many know that this area is prime habitat for this endangered species - the estimated population drop of up to 80% over 20 years as of 2022 . Their recovery (or not) from the 2019/20 black summer bushfire is ongoing and being monitored by researchers in the area.

(Sorry some of the video is a bit wobbly)

Lifting the lid on the bug lantern this morning after a night of gentle rain was always going to have trapped at least a few rain moths. Well, it ended up being 98 rain and ghost moths. Also trapped were 3 much smaller Bogong moths and a wattle snout moth. All were released safely in the bushland among some ribbon bark but I'm sure a few birds were keeping an eye on things.

Looks like the Bogong Moths don't mind stopping over in Batlow to feed up on overripe apples during their 1000+ km migration from the Snowy Mountains back way out west.

Something different to share for Mother's Day. It's a stunning night outdoors- not too cold, so dark, calm, clear and the stars are out.

Looking south east, 'Emu in the Sky' (Gawarrgay/Gugurmin) constellation is clear signalling the beginning of the emu breeding season. When the female emus chase and court multiple males.

And then, there is another astrological interpretation. This is the exact same spot using the Night Sky app.

Oh, and the Bogong moths are out too!
