October is here! :D

The Drunken Farmhand is heading to Beaudesert Library for a series of Witches’ Broom-Making Workshops!

Join us for a wonderfully whimsical, hands-on workshop where you’ll create a magical witches’ broom of your very own. Perfect for witches, wizards, goblins and crafty mortals alike in the lead up to Halloween!

No previous broom-making experience or magical qualifications required!

If you can, forage yourself a perfect branch to make the centre of your broom. we will have a small selection on hand for those who can't get out to get one. Bring along any special forage, dried flowers, dried leaves, anything you would like. The Pink native grasses are currently in abundance and make a nice accent to your broom.

Pop in some Rosemary or lavender for a scented broom!

Pickles will tell you when something has gone wrong and this is a great example.

These jars were made from the same batch, but the jar on the left has clearly failed. The cloudy brine and change in appearance are strong signs that something isn’t right.

A failed batch can happen for several reasons, including:

- A jar that hasn’t sealed correctly
- Contamination during preparation
- Wild yeast or microorganisms naturally present on the vegetables
- An inappropriate level of acidity

In this case, I suspect contamination, possibly a wild yeast on the onions or an issue with the seal.

The important lesson? Never taste a questionable jar to find out. If a preserve looks unusual, the seal has failed, the lid is bulging, it leaks, fizzes unexpectedly or smells wrong, throw it away.

When in doubt, throw it out. One jar of pickles is never worth the risk!
