We’re bringing Beechworth to Brisbane and Sydney this July for a trade tasting series showcasing one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate wine regions.

From its alpine setting in North East Victoria, Beechworth has long set the benchmark for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while also demonstrating depth across varieties such as Gamay, Nebbiolo, Riesling and Tempranillo - each shaped by the region’s distinct terroir.

These tastings bring together a compelling cross-section of producers, offering a valuable opportunity to engage directly with both the wines and the people behind them.

Whether you’re a sommelier, wine buyer, retailer, distributor, or part of the on- or off-premise trade, this is an essential date for your diary.

Introducing Star Lane

At the foot of the Victorian Alps, with its cool mountain air and sun filled days, enters a new chapter. Toni Pla Bou and Leonie Martino, having recently taken ownership of the winery, bring new energy and fresh ideas to Star Lane, while honouring its established character that has been built over nearly three decades.

Star Lane is a place alive with native birds, insects and wildlife; a thriving ecosystem that shapes the rhythm of the vineyard. With more than 25 years of winemaking experience across Australia and France, Toni brings a deep understanding of how landscape, climate and season shape a wine’s identity. His approach is grounded in attentive farming and thoughtful winemaking, allowing the vineyard’s yellow and red loams, alpine elevation and glacial soils to speak clearly through each variety. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Shiraz and Merlot will soon be released, with Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Roussanne emerging as future expressions of the site.

A new cellar door is currently taking shape. Toni and Leonie look forward to opening the doors soon and sharing the unfolding story of Star Lane with those who come to taste, explore and connect with this beautiful corner of Beechworth located at 51 Star Lane, Wooragee.

Introducing Weathercraft

Tucked into the Beechworth foothills, is a boutique vineyard and winery shaped by more than two decades of patient farming and a deep respect for the land. First planted in 1998, the site found new expression in 2017 when Hugh and Raquel Jones launched the Weathercraft label, building on the established vines and re‑imagining what this pocket of Beechworth could be.

Farmed according to biological principles, the vineyard is treated as a living system, with soil health at the heart of vine vitality. As winemaker, Raquel tends each of the estate’s 10,000+ vines by hand, from pruning and cane laying through to harvest, ensuring close attention at every stage of the growing season.

All wines under the Weathercraft label are grown, vinified and bottled on site, reflecting a fully estate approach and uncompromising standards. The focus is Beechworth Chardonnay alongside carefully chosen Iberian varieties, crafted to express site, season and thoughtful workmanship.

A small, modern cellar door sits on the property, welcoming visitors for tastings by appointment, with bookings available via the Weathercraft website. Located at 1241 Beechworth-Wangaratta Rd, Everton Upper.

Introducing Willem Kurt

Just south of the Beechworth township at 600 metres above sea level, Dan Balzer and his wife Marije van Epenhuijsen have established a seven‑acre vineyard planted to Vermentino, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sangiovese and Pinot Noir. Set on loam and shale soils flecked with quartz, the vineyard is entirely estate grown, hand tended and hand crafted.

Dan’s career in wine began in the late 1990s in the Yarra Valley, where he discovered the satisfying balance of science and creativity that winemaking offered. After studying science at the University of Tasmania and winemaking at Charles Sturt University, he moved to North East Victoria in 2003. The Willem Kurt label was founded in 2012, with land purchased and planting underway by 2017. The first fruit arrived in 2020, and by 2022 all production was drawn exclusively from the estate.

Guided by more than 25 years of experience, Dan works to a philosophy of minimal intervention: only doing what is necessary, paying close attention to the vines, and prioritising the long‑term health of the soil. This approach extends to the property itself, which includes an off‑grid, solar‑powered winery, a natural organic wastewater treatment system, and full composting and reuse of grape waste.

Today, the vineyard reflects a thoughtful balance of site, season and variety, shaped by patient farming and deliberate restraint. The cellar door opens on Sundays in the warmer months and at other times by appointment, inviting visitors to enjoy tastings, a cheese plate, and the surrounding views that define this quiet corner of Beechworth.

Open every Sunday (until late Autumn 2026) from 12pm to 5pm. Available other times by appointment. Located at 365 Buckland Gap Road, Beechworth.

Introducing Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown

High in the cool, sub‑alpine reaches of Beechworth, Tessa Brown and Jeremy Schmolzer have created a home, a vineyard, and a life amongst the rugged beauty of the high country. Together with their two young children, they are Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown, partners in wine and in life.

began with the planting of the Thorley Vineyard and the establishment of their home in the high country of North East Victoria. Perched among some of the highest and coolest sites in the Beechworth GI, their vineyard is farmed organically in all but the most challenging seasons. Their approach to winemaking is intentionally minimal, with a focus on purity, precision, and expressing the character of this elevated landscape.

Their story is one woven from diverse beginnings. Tessa, a third‑generation farmer, grew up among the cane fields of Far North Queensland, with family roots extending back to remote outback cattle country beyond the Great Dividing Range. A chance cellar‑door visit with her father in her teens ignited her passion for wine and grape growing, a career she has pursued since working for vineyards and wineries throughout Australia and overseas.

Jeremy, a Melburnian with Austrian heritage, spent years working as an architect in London and Austria. His upbringing, spanning his mother’s childhood on a small sheep farm in the Otways to his father’s village in rural West Styria, shares the same rural thread that runs through Tessa’s heritage. In 2014, with their first small harvest and the planting of the Thorley vineyard, Jeremy stepped into a new chapter.

Today, the family lives in Stanley, surrounded by apple and walnut orchards, crafting Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and more, from their Thorley vineyard as well as neighbouring high‑altitude sites like the Brunnen vineyard.

Open by appointment only, located at 39 Thorley Road, Stanley.

Introducing Traviarti

translates to “led astray”; a fitting reflection of the path that Nebbiolo set in motion for Simon Grant and Helen Murray. What began as curiosity quickly became immersion, with countless hours spent tasting, food matching and researching the variety that had captured their attention so completely.

At 600 metres in Beechworth, on deep shale and mudstone soils, they found the place that allowed them to follow this fascination further and bring their vision to life. Their ambition was to capture Nebbiolo as it expresses itself in the season and the site in which it’s grown.

The allure is unmistakable - the ethereal lift, the pretty aromatics, the intensity carried with elegance, and the deeply savoury, complete tannin profile that defines great Nebbiolo. It is this character that first led them astray, and it is the same character that continues to draw in Nebbiolo devotees everywhere.
