From Ben’s mum and dad’s shed on Bridge Road to our Beechworth brewery home, from the Cardboard Bar to Brunswick, from fresh hop beers to global collaborations, from The Posse to High Country Hops, from cycling events to community fundraisers, from staff ownership to three very different venues — it has been a wild, stubborn, independent, deeply rewarding ride.

And we’re still here.

Still independent. Still brewing in Beechworth. Still backing our people. Still learning. Still making beers to believe in.

Our annual birthday beer, B2 Bomber, returns for the occasion, and we’ll be celebrating across all three Bridge Road homes this weekend.

Beechworth. Brunswick. Melbourne Airport.

Come in for a beer, raise a glass, tell us a story, grab the birthday release and help us mark 21 years of Bridge Road Brewers.

To everyone who has drunk the beer, poured the beer, brewed the beer, delivered the beer, cooked the pizzas, washed the plates, bought the bottles and cans, joined the club, worked the bars, ridden the rides, danced at the festivals or brought your family through the door: thank you.

21 years. One brewery. Beer To Beleive In.

You can learn a lot about a brewery by looking at who hangs out in the beer garden. And at Bridge Road, the four-legged regulars run the show. We’ve always been strong believers that you can understand who a person is based off the kind of fur-baby you share a slice of pizza crust with. And believe us, we’ve seen them all. Just ask Ben.

Back in the very early days, Ben was gifted a pet goat named Paris (yes, Hilton…it was the early 2000’s of course). It was a classic piece of Beechworth’s history.

The goat took its role as brewery mascot very seriously, often found parading the town and being the cause for many phone calls to the business line. And while Paris eventually traded the brewery life for a peaceful retirement on a local farm, it set a precedent that pets will always welcome at Bridge Road Brewery.

Tomorrow is the big day. We officially turn 21!

Before we pour the birthday beers, we want to celebrate the pets who have kept us company along the way. Show us your brewery pups! Post your favourite photo of your dog at Bridge Road in the comments or your stories so we can share them today! 🐶👇

For some people, their first Bridge Road Brewers beer happens in Beechworth. For others, it’s Brunswick or at one of the hundreds of pubs, bars, restaurants and bottleshops that support us. And now, for a lot of people, it happens on the way somewhere else.

Our airport venue is a very different kind of Bridge Road home. It’s fast-moving, full of travellers, and often the first impression people get of who we are. But the job is still familiar: pour good beer, make people feel welcome, and give them a taste of the brewery before they even reach the High Country.

There’s something satisfying about that. A brewery that began in a shed on Bridge Road now has a front door in one of the busiest travel spaces in the state.

Beechworth gave us our roots. Brunswick gave us a new community. The airport helps send Bridge Road out into the world every day.

Independence only means something if you think carefully about who gets to keep the keys to the future.

Growth for the sake of it isn't our style. So, we opened our doors. Through our crowd-equity raise hundreds of you, the people who really matter, stepped up to become a permanent part of our story. Alongside that, we did something that means the world to us internally: we created a path for our own staff to own a piece of the brewery they pour their lives into every day.

Because the truth is, a brewery is never built by its founders alone.

It is built by the brewers waking up in the early hours to start the first mash run, the chefs on their feet all night and the venue crew welcoming everyone like they’re one of the locals. It’s built by the regulars who claim the same bar stool, the customers who choose us at their local bottleshop and the families and friends who lift us up.

At 21 years old, Bridge Road is still Ben and Maria’s story. But it belongs to a much bigger family now.

This post is for every single person who has worked here, backed us, bought in, turned up and helped carry this place forward. The list is too long to write down, and it keeps growing every day, but you know exactly who you are.

Thank you for 21 years of shared ownership, in every sense of the word.

Bridge Road Brunswick provided us a challenge to bring something different to an industry that had matured, to explore how we could bring a part of our home to Melburnians.

When we opened in East Brunswick Village, the goal was to create a social hub, a working brewery, a front bar that changed the usual relationship between staff and drinkers, a dining room built for families, locals, runners, riders, beer people and anyone who just wanted a good table.

It brought Bridge Road Brewers into Melbourne in a permanent way, but it also asked a new question: what does an independent regional brewery feel like in the inner north?

The answer has been shaped by the people who use it. Run club nights, community events, birthday dinners, first dates, after-work beers, kids in the play space, EBV locals, regulars at the bar.

Beechworth is our origin. Brunswick is now also our home.

When life gave us lockdowns, we didn't throw in the towel. We made whisky.
We all remember (though we try hard not to) what the world looked back in 2020. With pubs and restaurants suddenly shut, we were facing a very real dilemma: 700 kegs of freshly brewed craft beer with nowhere to go.

Instead of letting a single drop of that hard work go down the drain, a phone call was made to our mates down the road at with the crazy idea to run Beechworth Pale Ale through the stills and aged in Hungarian oak red wine and American oak red wine casks.

Whisky and beer both start their lives from barley, but distilling a fully hopped, commercial craft beer was a massive, unpredictable gamble. But it became an absolute game-changer. What started as an emergency rescue mission turned into an incredible bond between two independent Victorian businesses ready to back one another.

Before Bridge Road Brunswick became the venue you know today, we tested the idea in a very unusual way: with a bar made of cardboard.

In 2022, we opened a pop-up in East Brunswick Village fitted out almost entirely from cardboard, much of it recycled and designed to be reused, recycled or composted. It was part experiment, part statement, part practical prototype, our way to bring Bridge Road to Melbourne while the bigger venue was still taking shape.

It also said something about how we like to work. Don’t wait until everything is perfect. Build something, invite people in, learn from it, and make the next version better.

The cardboard bar was temporary, but it helped introduce Bridge Road to a new neighbourhood and set the tone for our Brunswick home: creative, welcoming, a little unconventional and built around beer and people.

For 21 years, Bridge Road Brewers has been supported by an incredible community of pubs, bars, restaurants, bottleshops and venues who choose to back us.

From the early days loading the brewery ute and making deliveries from Beechworth into Melbourne… to seeing BRB poured in venues across Australia and around the world today.

Some customers have been with us almost the whole journey. Others have only recently joined the BRB family.

To all of you — thank you.

We never take for granted the support, friendships and opportunities that have come from sharing our beer with like-minded venues and the people behind them.

If you’ve got an old BRB photo, tap decal, beer list, venue shot or memory from over the years, we’d love to see it shared as part of our 21st birthday countdown.
