Thea Shiraz 2023
Was $36 now $30

The Greek goddess of insight, in Shiraz form. Thea Shiraz 2023 comes from Freeman's Vineyard in the cool Hilltops region of NSW – a site that reliably delivers fruit with both attitude and elegance.

The grapes were crushed and destemmed, then given a gentle cold soak to coax out all that lush, vibrant flavour without heavy-handed extraction. Think of it as a soft-spoken seduction: enough colour and tannin to give shape, never enough to steal the spotlight. The berries were then basket pressed – the slow, old-school, utterly romantic way – before spending 18 months relaxing in French oak.

In the glass, this Shiraz is all glossy dark cherries, blackberry compote and mulberry, lifted with a hint of violet and a whisper of spice as white pepper dances across your palate. The palate is plush and silky, offering ripe forest fruits wrapped in smooth, powdery tannins. There’s a brightness and bounce that keeps everything feeling effortless – which is exactly why this wine is downright delicious served lightly chilled.

For food pairings, aim for something worthy of its charm: chargrilled lamb cutlets with rosemary, duck pancakes with hoisin, or a mushroom and thyme risotto. Whether it’s a slow Sunday lunch or a midweek “I deserve this” moment, this Shiraz is ready to play.

Region: Hilltops, New South Wales
Vineyard: Freeman's Vineyard
Winemaking: Crushed and destemmed, cold soak, basket pressed, 18 months in French oak
Style: Medium-bodied, plush, silky and vibrant
Serving: Enjoy at room temperature or lightly chilled
Food pairing: Lamb cutlets, duck pancakes, mushroom and thyme risotto

The 2021 Shiraz from the esteemed Ebenezer sub-region of the Barossa Valley presents a captivating tapestry of flavours and aromas that are quintessential to its origin. In the glass, this wine displays a profound depth of colour, a luxurious purple hue with a rim that speaks of vitality and youth.

On the nose, a symphony of dark fruits greets the senses; ripe blackberries and plums are underscored by a hint of mocha and an elegant touch of oak that whispers of its time spent maturing in the finest French barrels for 18 months. Layers of spice, perhaps a suggestion of star anise and a pinch of white pepper, add complexity and allure.

The palate is a revelation of boldness and balance. It offers a generous full body that envelops the mouth with velvety tannins and a rich, ripe fruitiness that Barossa Shiraz is celebrated for. Underneath the immediate lushness, there is a precise structure, a line of acidity that carries the wine to an impressive length on the finish.

Secondary notes of liquorice, cedar and leather weave through the wine, leading to a finish that is both powerful and graceful. This Shiraz is a reflection of the Ebenezer terroir – robust yet refined, with a potential to age gracefully, developing greater nuances over time.

Turkey Flat Shiraz 2022
Price: $45 was $55

Barossa history in a bottle. Crafted from some of the world’s oldest Shiraz vines—planted in 1847 on the Bethany Road vineyard—this wine marries power with poise.

Aromas of violets, fresh black fruits and spice rise from the glass with a hint of cedar. The palate is alive with blackberry, dark chocolate and plum, framed by fine, powdery tannins, a ferrous-like minerality and a savoury, long finish.

Each parcel (Bethany & Stonewell) was individually vinified in open-top fermenters and matured in French oak for up to 18 months, then blended to uphold Turkey Flat’s hallmark balance, freshness and cellarability.

Scanlon JMS Pinot Noir
Price: $60 was $70

The pinnacle of Scanlon Pinot Noir – three barrels, zero compromise.

The Scanlon JMS Pinot Noir 2023 is handpicked from the very top of the family vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills. Family and friends worked the rows, selecting only the finest bunches from the upper hillside blocks of high-density Abel, 667 and 115 clones – in some cases, just three tiny bunches per vine, each packed with flavour.

In the winery, 100% of the fruit was destemmed and fermented warm in wide stainless-steel fermenters to maximise skin contact. Extended maceration and prolonged time on skins built depth, structure and that dark, brooding core of fruit. The wine was then fermented and matured as separate parcels in François Frères French oak hogsheads for 11 months (just 14% new), before only three barrels were selected for the final blend.

The result is a powerful, Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir: deep red-purple in colour, with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, red plum, sweet spice, alpine herbs and faint clove. The palate is concentrated yet poised – silky and fine-boned, with a subtle pumice-like mineral grip and long, flowing acidity that carries the wine for what feels like minutes.

Vineyard: Upper hillside blocks, high-density Abel, 667 & 115 clones
Winemaking: 100% destemmed, warm fermentation, extended maceration, 11 months in François Frères hogsheads (14% new)
Style: Powerful, structured, Burgundian-inspired Pinot Noir
Production: Only 3 barrels produced – extremely limited
Serving: Decant while young; ideal large Pinot or Burgundy glass
Food pairing: Roast duck, venison, mushroom dishes, truffle pasta

A Pinot of real substance and longevity – for collectors, serious Pinot fans and Shiraz drinkers looking for their “aha” Pinot moment.

Georgia Dale XIXI Syrah
Price: $25 was $36

Elegant cool climate Syrah from the Heathcote wine region of Victoria.

This is a seriously smart buy in the sale. The Georgia Dale XIXI Syrah is an elegant, cool climate Syrah that shows just how good Heathcote can be when structure and finesse come together. Aged for 12 months in 100% new Hungarian oak, it brings a real point of difference, sitting somewhere between the style of French and American oak. The result is a wine that feels polished, impressive and beautifully put together. There’s structure, detail and enough depth to enjoy now, but it also has the balance to reward time in the cellar. Even better, the last vintage scored 94 points in the Halliday Wine Companion and completely sold out, so this is one worth getting in on while it’s here.
