🌸 It's the first day of spring, and we have a busy month ahead.

The cherry blossoms are starting to appear across the Southern Highlands, which is always a good sign. Here is what is coming up for us.

Father's Day is this Sunday. If you are still deciding, the shop is stocked and ready, and we are very good at helping you work out what he actually wants.

Then we are off to Tulip Time next week. Come and find our stand, say hello, and stock up while you are there.

And the shelves are ready for the season. A spring essential, our jams and marmalades. The ones that belong on a warm scone in the garden rather than a slice of toast by the heater. Picnic season starts now, so the relishes, mustards, dressings and the good crackers are all back where you can find them.

There is an art to a winter Sunday, and it involves doing as little as possible with as much intention as you can muster. No rushing, no long list of jobs, just a slow start and a warm drink to wrap your hands around.

Brew a pot of your favourite tea, stir in a spoon of honey, find the sunniest spot in the house and let the afternoon unfold at its own pace. It's the season that gives you permission to slow right down, so take it.

The chilli jam question I am asked more than any other: red or green.

Red is the sweeter of the two. Put it beside a sharp cheddar and watch a cheese board disappear.

Green is brighter and hotter and belongs next to anything that has been on a barbecue.

The correct answer, as it usually is, is one of each.

Spring in the Southern Highlands books out, so this is the week to think about it.

Tulip Time Southern Highlands is the draw, and once it starts the whole region gets busy. Which is exactly why the people who know what they are doing build the day around Berrima instead of fighting for a park in Bowral.

Our run would be this. Berrima first thing, while it is quiet. Walk the village, coffee somewhere with a fire still going. Then push on to Bowral for the tulips mid morning, once you have already had the good part of your day.

On the way back through, stop with us. Berrima is where you buy the things you take home. Bowral will sell you a coffee and a nice afternoon. We will sell you six months of good breakfasts.

Today is Daffodil Day, and this year it is forty years of it.

When Cancer Council held the first one in 1986, five year cancer survival in Australia sat at around 46 per cent. It is now around 72 per cent. That did not happen by accident. It happened because for four decades ordinary people bought a pin, wore something yellow, put a tin on a counter and kept going.

One in two Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 85. There is not a family I know that has been left alone by it.

So today, wear something yellow. Donate if you can, at Cancer Council Australia

And if someone in your life is in the middle of it right now, do the small thing rather than the grand one. Ring them. Turn up. Put the kettle on and stay a while. That is what people remember.

There is a hedge maze in Berrima and most people have no idea it is there.

Harpers Mansion sits just off the main village, a Georgian house now cared for by the National Trust. The house is worth it on its own, but the garden is the surprise. Behind it is a proper hedge maze, designed and planted by local landscaper Michael Jackman while he resided there between 1999 and 2006 turning the property from simply being a historic house into a garden destination and family attraction as well. The garden is now tended and maintained by volunteers, and there is something quietly delightful about being lost in one on a cold morning with nobody else around.

Winter is the underrated season for Highlands gardens. The camellias and hellebores are doing their work while everything else sleeps, the light is low and long, and you largely get the place to yourself.

Check the National Trust for opening days before you drive up, as they vary but the weekends are safe.

Then come and thaw out with us afterwards in store we will have the kettle on.
