We've all been through it.

We all know people who are almost impossible to buy for. They say they have everything they need. They know what they like. And somehow, every good idea has already been used.

Let us help you. Give them something they may not see coming.

A bottle of Mead offers more than another present to unwrap. It gives them a new flavour to discover, a story to share and hopefully, you will hear the words:

“I’ve never tried that before. I love it!”

Tell us what drinks they usually enjoy and we can help narrow down the right direction, whether that is fruity, spiced, rich or traditional.

Because the best gift is not always something they asked for. Maybe it's something they never knew to ask for.

And if you are the impossible-to-buy-for person, send this to someone who keeps asking what you want. Consider it a helpful hint. You're welcome!

Is Mead always sweet?

No. Mead as a category can range from drier styles through to beautifully sweet ones.

Honey provides the fermentable sugar at the beginning, but fermentation changes it. Yeast converts much of that sugar into alcohol, creating a drink that can taste very different from the honey that went into it.

The final experience is also shaped by balance. Acidity, alcohol, fruit, spices, botanicals and the amount of sweetness remaining can all influence how a Mead tastes.

That means two Meads made with honey can offer completely different experiences.

Some may feel bright and refreshing. Others may be fruit-led, warming, spiced, rich or sweet.

So, sweetness is part of the story, but it does not define the entire category.
Where would you begin: drier, sweeter or somewhere in between?

Have you spotted our Collector Club bottles at the markets or in our tasting room?

While many bottles across the Thistle range come in our familiar 500 ml format, Collector releases arrive in a larger 750 ml bottle.

Each month, Collector members receive one featured Mead to discover. The larger format provides more opportunity to enjoy it across several pours, revisit it another evening or share it with someone else.

The Collector Club is not about receiving a large box of bottles every month. It is about having one featured Mead to anticipate, explore and enjoy at your own pace.

Discover the Collector Club on our website.

Choosing a Mead does not always have to begin with what is on the plate.

Sometimes it begins with how we want the moment to feel. Something bright and playful might lead us towards a fruit-led Mead. A slow, cosy evening may call for something rich, warming or spiced. When we feel curious, an unfamiliar fruit, botanical or bolder flavour combination can offer something completely different.
And sometimes, keeping things simple with a traditional Honey Mead is exactly the mood.

These are not rules, just different starting points for discovering the range.

What are you in the mood for today: bright, cosy, curious or familiar?

How should Mead be served?

Should it be chilled? Does it need a special glass? Is it best enjoyed with food, after dinner or completely on its own?

The answer depends on the Mead and on what feels right for the occasion.

Lighter and fruitier Meads can be lovely lightly chilled. Richer or spiced varieties may reveal more of their aroma as they warm gently in the glass.

There is no need for special glassware or a complicated tasting ritual. A w**e glass, tasting glass or clean tumbler can all work.

Mead can also be enjoyed with far more than dessert. Cheese, fruit, roasted food, shared dishes and simple grazing plates can all offer interesting places to begin.

Our new blog brings these ideas together in one straightforward guide to serving, pouring and pairing Mead without turning it into a rulebook.

What happens when fruit or spices are added to Mead?

Much more than simply creating a new flavour name.

Fruit can influence the colour, aroma, acidity, body and finish of a Mead. It might make the experience bright and refreshing, softly aromatic, gently tart or deep and rich.

A fruit Mead is not automatically sweet. The final experience depends on the fruit, the fermentation and how the Mead is made.

Spices can add warmth, aromatic depth, earthiness, gentle heat or a longer finish. Sometimes they sit quietly behind the honey. Sometimes they become the defining character of the Mead.

The honey may be the foundation, but fruit and spices can take the finished Mead in a completely different direction.

Which would you explore first: fruity, spiced or a little of both?

If you usually drink w**e, where should you begin with Mead?

Mead does not taste like w**e and we would never suggest that one is a substitute for the other.

However, the reasons you reach for a particular w**e can offer useful clues.

If you enjoy crisp white w**es, you may be drawn to lighter Meads with citrus, apple or floral notes.

If bright, fruit-forward w**es are more your style, begin with berry, cherry or stone-fruit flavours.

Prefer something rich and full-bodied? Look towards deeper flavours such as dark fruit, chocolate, caramelised honey or warming spices.

If sweet or dessert w**es are your choice, a honey-forward or richly fruited Mead may be a comfortable place to begin.

The aim is not to find a Mead that tastes like your usual w**e. It is to recognise the flavours and drinking experiences you already enjoy - and use those as your starting point.

Save this guide for your next visit to one of our markets or your next Thistle Mead tasting.
