Australia is home to many unique and beautiful freshwater crayfish species. Sadly, some rare and colourful crayfish are targeted by illegal wildlife traffickers.
Illegal trade can include:
✅ unauthorised collection from the wild
✅ illegal movement across state or territory borders
✅ exporting wildlife without proper permits
✅ hiding animals in luggage or falsely labelling packages
This illegal trade threatens wild crayfish populations, damages ecosystems, and hurts legitimate Australian fishers, farmers, and exporters who are doing the right thing.
Exporting Australian wildlife without a permit is a serious offence under Australian national environment laws, with penalties of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and fines of up to $330,000.
