Hey there 👋🏽
Busy times at ‘Moolyella’ as the Rams were ready for shearing to line them up for our Annual Sale. The date has been set for the 20th of October. They’ve come out of their wool looking really good and we’re really pleased! With thanks to Kelly Shearing Services Pty Ltd for doing a great job as always. 🐑✨

The Borders are due to start lambing any time now. We’ve had significant rainfall in the past week of about 75mm which has given the soil a good soak and helps to keep our pasture green and gives us some guarantee into the season ahead. 🌱☔️

🐑 Preg-testing our Stud Border Leicester and Composite Ewes. 🐑

⭐️ The Border Leicester Ewes scanned 98% in Lamb.
⭐️ Mature Composite Ewes scanned 100% in Lamb.
⭐️ Composite Ewe Lambs scanned 93% in Lamb; 60% singles and 40% multiples.

We are very pleased with the results with the tough season of dry conditions.

Thanks to Greg of Profitable Livestock who looks after us every year providing this valuable data, showing our fertility is on track with our expectations. 🏆

Here are our Border Leicester Rams all penned up ready for shearing by Kelly Shearing Services Pty Ltd in the last week of July.

We shear now to present them for our sale in ultimate working condition and for the buyer to observe the wool type.

It's our third year since introducing Micron Testing to determine the quality of the wool; Yearling Greasy Fleece Weight data was also captured at shearing and these values will be available in our catalogue.

Annual On-property Ram Sale to be held on the 21st October 2020.

It's a beautiful 15° day here in Binnum and lambing is in full swing.

Our Composite ewe lambs were joined in February at six months of age, scanning in lamb at 92% with 58% being multiples.

Our Maternal Composites 🐑
John developed an interest in improving fertility and carcass traits in maternal sheep during the 1990s after many years of experience in both the sheep and cattle industries. John was a founder and president of the Frances Lamb Finishers Group, one of the first in Australia to trial feedlot rations and growth rates.
Crossbreeding at 'Moolyella' started in 1994 when John's interest in increasing sheep fertility led to the purchase of a Finnsheep ram, initially used to crossbreed with some of our Border Leicester stud ewes. The resulting 'Finn Leicesters' offered a fertile, finer woolled alternative maternal sire. To advance the recently imported Finnsheep genetics, a Finnsheep stud was established which was developed to reliably average more than 250% lambing.
While highly fertile at a very young age, the Finn crossbreds lacked muscling, so after experimenting with artificial insemination and a fact finding mission to New Zealand, it was decided to introduce Texel genetics. Stock was selected from two Texel stud dispersals and our Texel stud was formed. Later, East Friesian genetics with their milking and growth advantages, were added to the mix and a stud also created. Although no shedding breeds have been introduced, selection has been made for a barer crutch area with clean points for ease of management.
The resulting breed blend is Jay-Dee Maternals, ideal for self-replacing flocks and also for introducing to crossbred or Merino flocks.
Our farm has its own feedlot used to trial growth rates and carcass traits of the composites, with John and Josh carefully analysing feedback from over the hooks sales.
Jay-Dee Maternals produce an early maturing lamb of medium weight that can also be carried on to heavier weights without excess fat.

Our Border Leicesters 🐑
The Deepwater Border Leicester Stud was established in 1973 by Judy on her original family property 'Deepwater' moving to 'Moolyella' after her marriage to John Dowdy in 1988 where it is today.
With six Creston Stud ewes, bloodlines from the The Oaks Stud were added with emphasis on a dense, medium to finer fleece type.
The stud joined Lambplan in 1993 aiming to improve the Border Leicesters. Soon after, John and some fellow breeders established the ‘Super Ewes’ Group to progress the breeding of high fertility maternal sheep.
Deepwater became a founding member of SuperBorders Inc - a progressive group of stud breeders using Lambplan to produce better Borders.
Structural soundness is always our first priority in the stud breeding program, striving for improved fertility, growth, milking and carcass traits. An annual A.I. program allows us access to the best genetics available.
We’ve come a long way over the years, constantly striving for genetic improvement has changed the traditional maternal breed to one more suited for today’s lamb production.

Our Farm ‘Moolyella’ is located in fertile soils and red gum covered grazing land in the heart of Binnum in the lower south-eastern corner of South Australia; allowing close access for both Victorian and South Australian clients.
