Handcrafted in small batches and inspired by the region, with our tasting room in the town of Birregurra. Welcome to the Otways Distillery. We base ourselves here in the hinterland, just up the road from Apollo Bay and the Great Ocean Road. Our small batch gins, vodkas and limoncellos are a celebration of all we have in this beautiful part of Victoria. We’re proud of our ever growing collection of

delicious spirits. Locally sourced and foraged ingredients underpin the various flavour profiles of our products. Collaborating with locals to showcase the native and farmed botanicals and foods of the region, we’re constantly inspired to create exciting products. We have captured some amazing flavours of the Otways and incorporate them into our spirits. It’s the spirit of the Otways distilled in a bottle! Please join me on this amazing journey and enjoy some of the finest tipples in our region. Tastings and sales are available at the farmers markets, festivals and markets on weekends and we are in the process of organising our own location in the Otways.. Here's cheers to that!

Why do you drive your dad to drink—or why does he deserve one?

I could write a book about my dad Alan…

Like the time I brought home another dog at 16 and he said we would both have to move out.

Or when he caught me wagging uni because I couldn’t find a car park and was hungover and didn’t want to walk!

Then there was moving to London while my Melbourne house was being renovated, buying a general store, and finally buying a burnt-out restaurant to turn into Otways Distillery! There are worst stories than this but they don’t serve drinks in jail!

Quite honestly, he deserves a medal—and definitely a drink after a lot of what I have put him through!!!

🥃 Happy International Whisky Sour Day!

A very good excuse to make one of the classics — our Working Dog Sour.

The recipe:
50ml Working Dog Whisky
25ml fresh lemon or lime juice
25ml simple syrup
2 dashes bitters
Ice + cherry to garnish

Dry shake everything first, add ice and shake again. Double strain over fresh ice and garnish with a cherry.

Simple, sour and bloody delicious. 🥃🍋

Father’s Day lunch at Otways Distillery

Sunday 6 September | 11am–2pm

Lunch by Tolga Street Food, with tacos, beef smash burgers and tasty fries. Gluten-free and vegetarian options available.

And we’ll also officially launch our second whisky, created in honour of my dad Alan Richardson and his much-loved dog, Darius the Wonder Poodle. It has more depth in style than the working dog and is made from stout wash and aged in a maple barrel to round it up and smooth it off.

Something you might not know about me… 🎨

I was supposed to go to the VCA to study Fine Art and painting, but I decided I probably wasn’t going to be an amazing artist 😂 so I chose design instead — somewhere I could still create and make things look good.

What I eventually realised is that I just love creating things.

It’s why I love creating spirits from the incredible produce grown around us here in the Otways, and it’s also where our Otways Creative Workshops have come from.

For me, it’s about community, creativity and collaboration — bringing people together to make something, learn something, have a laugh and connect. ❤️

I met Lauren over four years ago at a market during Covid. I loved her work, then discovered she was the niece of Nipper Cameron — who owned the building I wanted to buy! Funny how life works… because now she’s like a sister to me. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who came to our first workshop. Seeing all those smiling faces creating together meant so much.
