At birth, we record parentage, date of birth, s*x, weight, calving ease and gestation length. Each calf receives ID and NLIS tags, and we collect a TSU sample for DNA testing.

Beyond birth, we record growth, docility, mature cow weights and scrotal measurements, alongside independent structural assessments and observations at joining and pregnancy testing. We collect 400- and 600-day weights for cattle still on the property, and are working towards more consistent recording from weaning onwards.

Our aim is to give producers buying our cattle confidence in the data we submit to the breed society and the EBVs it helps inform.

The aim is simple: combine the growth, muscle and carcase yield of Simmental with the maternal strength, carcase quality and marketability of Angus, with the goal of producing more kilograms of quality beef per calf.

Our SimAngus bulls on offer in 2027 will be 50% Angus, 50% Simmental. When joined to straight Angus females, they'll produce approximately 75% Angus, 25% Simmental progeny, giving Angus-based herds an opportunity to introduce Simmental performance while retaining a strong Angus base.

For producers selling calves, we're aiming for more weight, shape and muscle in a marketable black package.

For those retaining females, we see plenty of value in the daughters too. We'd happily build a commercial herd around the right SimAngus females: soft, easy-keeping, functional cows.

SimAngus won't be the right tool for every herd. For some, Angus will remain exactly the right fit. For others, purebred Simmental may offer what they're looking for.

SimAngus simply gives producers another option to capture the strengths of both breeds.

Good feet and legs are non-negotiable for us.

Our cattle work across steep, hilly country. Cows need to travel to graze and find water, while bulls must remain sound throughout joining. Our hills tend to expose poor feet pretty quickly.

Thatโ€™s why we use several layers of selection. Our own visual assessment is backed by independent structural assessment, with cows assessed annually and bulls evaluated multiple times as they develop. We also use Angus structural EBVs for Claw Set, Foot Angle and Leg Angle as another tool to guide our breeding decisions.

Ultimately, we want our bulls to be moving freely, servicing cows and doing their job years later, while leaving daughters with the structural soundness to remain productive cows for years to come.

When we talk about the type of female weโ€™re trying to breed more of, K333 and the generations that have followed her are a pretty good example.

K333 is a daughter of Carrington Park Dream B3 (purchased under BoonARKM in 2010). B3 remained productive in the herd until 15 years of age and left her mark through both her Angus and SimAngus progeny.

K333 has well and truly carried that forward.

Born in 2014, she had plenty of success in the show ring early, but her real value has been proven as a cow.

She has produced 10 natural calves, and weโ€™ve retained every daughter. Across her progeny, the same traits continue to come through:

The Dream females are incredibly quiet, something people regularly comment on, and a trait that has remained remarkably consistent through the generations.

Her first daughter, P555, is now one of our favourite females. She has successfully calved and reared three sets of twin bulls, with all six bulls selling to the same repeat buyer. Her daughters have continued the quality of the family, including one we offered in our February sale. This spring, P555 is earmarked to enter our donor program.

K333โ€™s influence extends through her sons as well. We recently visited one of her bull calves, now six years old, still working and incredibly sound.

And our belief in the Dream cow family goes further again.

Our Dreams trace back to Banquet Kiwi Dream +92, an incredibly influential female with 183 registered progeny.
In 2024, when the opportunity came to purchase a flush from Wi******er Livestock Dream T28- a Paratrooper daughter from the Vermont Dream Y301 family, we jumped at it.
Y301 has been described by fellow Angus breeders as

The resulting calves are being weaned next week, bringing another branch of the Dream family into our herd.

For us, this is what a great cow family looks like. Not one standout female, but generation after generation of productive, consistent cattle.

Just honest, good cows that get the job done.

And thatโ€™s why the Dream family continues to have such an important place at Limitless.

For us, success has never been just about numbers.
We want to do things well. To treat people fairly and honestly, look after our family, and make the most of the opportunities and responsibilities weโ€™ve been given.
Weโ€™d rather focus on fewer things and do them properly than try to do everything.

After almost 20 years in the Angus breed, the drive to keep improving hasnโ€™t changed. Every breeding season is another opportunity to refine what weโ€™re doing and make the next calf crop better than the last.

Weโ€™re incredibly grateful for the people who have helped us along the way. Breeders, commercial producers, mentors, vets, family and friends who have shared their knowledge, encouraged us, challenged our thinking or simply turned up when we needed them.

It truly takes a village.

To us, stewardship means doing our best with what weโ€™ve been entrusted with. Improving our cattle, our land and ourselves, and teaching those lessons to our boys along the way.

Ultimately, that improvement needs to add value for the producers who put their trust in our genetics.

We want our bulls to perform, last and leave a positive impact on a herd for generations.

Wednesday brought one of those moments in farming that wasn't part of our plan.
We lost twin bull calves from a cow we'd had high hopes for.
We were disappointed, but it was also a reminder of something we need to remember far beyond the cattle paddock.

โ€œA man's heart deviseth his way: but Yahweh directeth his steps.โ€
Proverbs 16:9

We make plans all the time. For our cattle, our business, our family and our lives. We work hard towards them, pray about them and naturally hope for a good outcome.
But our faith can't depend on God giving us the outcome we had planned.
Daniel 3 has been on our minds too. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knew that God was able to deliver them, but then came those powerful words:
โ€œBut if notโ€ฆโ€
Their commitment to God didn't change when they considered the possibility that He might not deliver them in the way they hoped.
That's something we want to remember.
God is able. But if not, He is still good.
Our responsibility is to keep serving Him faithfully. To read His Word, pray for His guidance and keep our hearts open to the possibility that His way may be different from the one we had planned.
Sometimes that means simply coming back to the basics: serving God, caring for our family, supporting our ecclesia and faithfully doing the work He has put in front of us.
We will keep making plans and keep working towards them. But ultimately, we want to be willing to let God direct our steps.

Embryo transfer, or ET, has become an important tool in our breeding program.

Put simply, ET allows us to produce multiple calves from a female we believe is worth replicating.

A donor female goes through a carefully managed hormone program designed to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs. She is then AI'd to a selected sire, and seven days later an ET technician flushes the embryos from the donor.

The embryos are assessed and suitable embryos are either frozen for later use or transferred warm into recipient cows that have been synchronised to be at the same stage of their reproductive cycle. The recipient carries, calves and raises the calf, but the genetics come from the donor female and the sire.

For us, the real value of ET is the access it gives us to female genetics.

Semen from leading sires is relatively easy to access. The best females are a different story. They may never be offered for sale, may be overseas, or purchasing the female herself may simply not be possible. Embryos give us another way to access those cow families and introduce new genetics into our herd.

We also use ET with our own females, but the bar for entering our donor program is high. If we're going to produce multiple calves from one cow, she needs to represent what we're trying to breed: structure, phenotype, temperament, performance, strong EBVs and, wherever possible, a proven history of producing quality calves.

ET also allows us to produce larger, more consistent groups of calves from selected cow families without simply running more breeding cows, something particularly valuable when land is limited.

But ET isn't a guarantee of a great calf. Every calf still has to prove itself.

When you see ET beside a Limitless animal, what it does tell you is that we've deliberately chosen to give that female greater influence within our program.

ET doesn't replace good breeding decisions. It gives us another way to multiply the genetics we believe are worth multiplying.

As weโ€™ve become more focused on what we want to breed at Limitless, weโ€™ve spent a lot of time considering exactly where our Simmental cattle fit.

Angus will remain the foundation and predominant offering at Limitless, but we believe the right Simmental genetics have an important role alongside them.

Weโ€™re looking for a very specific type of Simmental. The fundamentals remain the same across our herd: fertility, temperament, soundness, productivity and longevity. But our Simmentals also need to bring something extra to the table, particularly muscle and yield.

We see a real opportunity to offer producers different tools for different herds and breeding objectives. Our bull offering will be predominantly Angus, alongside a selected group of purebred Simmental and an expanding SimAngus offering.

We particularly love what a well-planned SimAngus cross can offer, bringing together the strengths of both breeds while capturing the benefits of hybrid vigour.

But there needs to be a purpose behind every mating. We donโ€™t want to breed Simmental or SimAngus simply for the sake of it. The cattle need to perform, meet our breeding objectives and, ultimately, produce something commercial producers want to buy.

We love the Simmental breed, the people it has connected us with and we love what good Simmental genetics can contribute to a commercial breeding program.

For us, it isnโ€™t Angus or Simmental. Itโ€™s about using each where they add the most value. Complement, not compete.

Choosing the right sire is incredibly important.

But we believe itโ€™s only half the equation.

Every calf receives half of its genetics from its dam, which is why we place just as much emphasis on selecting and investing in our females as we do our sires.

A great sire is far more likely to reach his potential when heโ€™s joined to generations of proven, productive females.

Thatโ€™s why we study female families just as carefully as we study sires. Weโ€™re looking for generations of fertile, productive, structurally sound cows that consistently do the job.

When we invest in a female, weโ€™re investing in the future of our breeding program, not just the next calf.

Better conception rates rarely come from one magic fix.

More often, theyโ€™re the result of dozens of small 1% improvements all working together over time.

Over the years weโ€™ve continually refined and adjusted how we approach our AI programs, and one of the biggest things weโ€™ve learnt is that conception rates are built through management, preparation and attention to detail.

Just because cows are grazing on long green grass doesnโ€™t always mean their nutritional requirements are being fully met. We now spend a lot more time focusing on nutrition and feed quality, working alongside nutritionists and agronomists to better understand exactly what our cows need especially leading into joining.

Stress reduction has also become a huge focus for us.

Calm cattle handling, allowing extra time, making sure we have enough helpers, having clear roles for each person, organising supplies well in advance and creating systems that keep everything smooth and low stress for both cattle and people.

Small things matter:
hygiene handling CIDRs and needles
Hand drawing each dose with new needles
- checking drugs and semen supplies weeks ahead
- ensuring cows are close to the yards during programs
- feeding hay in the yards to encourage cattle to walk in calmly
- using an electric thaw cup for semen
- maintaining loose lick minerals year round
- allowing 60 days from calving to AI (although we have also had strong success with later calving cows at 45+ days)

Weโ€™ve also learnt to stay open minded.

Thereโ€™s no one โ€œperfectโ€ system that suits every herd, every environment or every operation. Weโ€™ve taken advice from AI technicians, vets, nutritionists and other breeders over the years, then refined systems to suit OUR cows and OUR environment.

The result has been a significant improvement in fertility and conception rates within our autumn herd, increasing from around 60% to consistently 80โ€“90% AI conception, with so many cows now holding first round that we simply don't bother with a return round.

Weโ€™ve also consistently see at least two twin births a year now.

At the end of the day, fertility drives profitability and we believe discipline matters. Cows that continually miss AI without obvious reason donโ€™t stay in the program. No excuses.

Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all system in cattle breeding, but continual refinement, attention to detail and being willing to learn has made a huge difference in ours.

For us, better conception rates have come from simply trying to become brilliant at the basics.

What are some of the small changes that have improved fertility and conception rates in your herd?
