One of the challenges of selling chickens is that many customers never get the opportunity to see the birds before they arrive to collect them.

That’s why we try to regularly share photos from the flock as they grow and develop.

We believe people should be able to see the condition of the birds they’re purchasing, not just read a description.

This girl is one of our current 16+ week old Hy-Line Browns. Healthy, active and coming along nicely as she approaches point of lay.

For us, sharing the journey is more important than the sale.

The chicken caravan has come a long way, but we’re always looking for ways to improve it.

One of the next changes will be replacing the natural timber perches with metal roosting bars. While the timber looks more natural, metal is easier to clean, easier to disinfect and gives fewer places for pests such as mites to hide.

Not every improvement on a farm is exciting, but the small changes often make the biggest difference over time.

These 16+ week old Hy-Line Browns are settling into beautiful condition as they approach point of lay.

One of the things we look for at this age is good feather coverage, strong body condition and healthy comb development as the birds mature.

It’s always rewarding watching a batch progress from young growers into productive backyard hens.

A good quality feed and a little less stress goes a long way during moulting season.

June has arrived, and with it comes our quietest season on the farm.

The mornings are colder, the grass grows slower, and the flock settles into a different rhythm.

Over the next month we’ll be sharing more of what winter actually looks like at The Little Chicken Farm, from flock management and moulting hens to projects, pullets, eggs and the day-to-day realities of running a small farm through the colder months.

One thing we always notice this time of year is how much more the chickens appreciate morning sun in winter ☀️

Even on cold frosty mornings, they’ll naturally chase the first warm patches around the yard.

Good winter coop setup doesn’t need to be overcomplicated either. Simple things like:
• dry bedding
• morning sunlight
• wind protection
• clean water
• airflow without cold drafts

…make a huge difference heading into the colder months.

Winter is usually when good flock management really starts to show.

We currently have Hy-Line Brown pullets available from Boddington and can organise collections by appointment.

These girls are at a really nice age now, fully feathered, settled, and getting closer to laying.

These girls are right on the edge of moving into the next age bracket and are ideal for backyard flocks heading into winter.

Friendly birds, well grown and coming along beautifully.
