So much good in this world. If you look for better you will find better.
When Heath Ledger died in January 2008 at just 28 years old, he left behind a $16.3 million fortune. His will, however, made no mention of the one person who mattered most to him.
Ledger had signed his will in April 2003, two years before his daughter, Matilda, was born. The document left his entire estate to his parents and three sisters, with no legal provision for the two-year-old girl he shared with his former partner and Brokeback Mountain co-star, Michelle Williams. Under the letter of the law, Matilda had no automatic claim to any of it.
Ledger's family made their intentions clear almost immediately. His father, Kim Ledger, told reporters shortly after his son's death that there had been no question about where the money would go, stating plainly that the family had gifted everything to Matilda. His parents and sisters, Kate, Olivia, and Ashleigh, made sure both Matilda and her mother would be fully provided for, despite having every legal right to keep the estate for themselves.
The support didn't stop within the family. At the time of his death, Ledger had been in the middle of filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and his passing left the production in crisis. Rather than abandon the film, director Terry Gilliam made the unusual decision to have three different actors, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, each portray alternate versions of Ledger's character to complete his remaining scenes.
All three actors agreed to donate their entire salaries from the film directly to Matilda. Gilliam later described the gesture as extraordinary and wonderful, saying moments like that reminded him exactly why he'd gotten into filmmaking in the first place.
Matilda, now in her twenties, grew up in New York City alongside her mother, who went on to have three more children with her husband, theater director Thomas Kail. Throughout her childhood, Matilda was surrounded by people determined to fill the space her father's absence left behind. Her godparents include Jake Gyllenhaal and Busy Philipps, and actor Jeremy Strong lived with Michelle and Matilda for a period of time, becoming a steady, playful presence in her life. Williams later reflected that while Matilda didn't grow up with her father, she grew up with someone who understood how to hold space for a child's grief through simple things like play and imagination.
What began as a legal oversight, a will written before its most important beneficiary ever existed, turned into something far more meaningful. Between his own family's decision and the quiet generosity of three fellow actors, Matilda Ledger never had to fight for what her father would have wanted her to have all along.
