A bit of Saturday arvo weeding with the young bloke lending a hand.

The Italian Red is starting to look good, plenty of leaf area, good height and the bulbs are starting to size underneath. There’s a bit of yellowing in the older lower leaves, which is to be expected as the crop starts putting more into bulb fill.

The ground is still plenty wet, so for now it’s mostly about keeping the weeds down, looking after the roots and letting the crop do its thing.

Still a fair way to go, but it’s starting to look like a decent crop.

And so it begins. Just over an acre of potato ground for the coming season has been marked out and hoed.

3 varieties this year Dutch Cream, Prince of Orange and Bliss will be grown.

With over 4 acres of crop in the ground this will be our biggest year to date.

We have a semi permanent aluminium irrigation system coming that can run the whole lot in one hit if need be.

Tillage radish doing its job on last seasons garlic ground.

The radish is now flowering, so it’s time to terminate it before it sets seed. It’s helped open up the soil with deep taproots, recycle nutrients, build organic matter and add plenty of biomass back into the ground.

The oats will be left to keep growing a bit longer before the whole lot is eventually worked back in or left to set seed.

Pre dawn weeding has started, with a week of rain forecast making the most of dryish conditions.

Trying to get back over the ground as quick as I can. Tractor tine weeding would be ideal right now for taking out weeds but the ground is too wet.

Rye grass, clover and lotus minor seem to be the main weeds we have issues with due to thier deep root systems and ground coverage.

Italian Red garlic receiving a targeted application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium this afternoon to support continued vegetative growth, root development and bulb formation.

Tine weeding tomorrow while the weeds are still small, helping reduce competition without relying on herbicides. Hand weeding is in full swing as well.

It will be sad to see this line of yearling heifers go to Boyanup on Tuesday. At around 400 to 450kg, my guess... they are the best looking heifers we have produced with very quiet temperament to match.

We have been into breeding cattle now for 9 years, its taken a steady selection process along the way to get the traits we need in our herd.

With a drier and warmer spring summer forecast, we might try something new this year and wean our calves around 8 to 9 months instead of 11 to 12. Thought been it will ease up any pressure on pasture at our home block for months ahead.

We’ve brought in a new Gandy Angus bull to add some fresh genetics into the herd.
He’s settled in well, already mixing with the cows and calves, and should bring a bit more strength, depth and quality through the next generation.
Good cattle start with good genetics, and this fella is here to help keep pushing the herd forward.

Picked up this old potato harvester and the plan is to modify it so we can lift both spuds and garlic straight into bins.

She’s not pretty, but it has an elevator, sorting area, bin platform and plenty of steel to work with. A few changes needed to suit our garlic beds and make it handle the crop gently, but it should save a heap of back-breaking work at harvest.

Bit of farm engineering ahead, but that’s half the fun.

Can’t wait to see it running in the paddock.
