KALFRESH BACKS NEXT GENERATION
Vee Jay's Kalfresh Head of Agronomy Jacob Jurgens is throwing his support behind a new national initiative aimed at building skills, confidence and connection for the next generation of horticulture professionals.
Jacob is a committee member for the newly launched "Future Hort Leaders Forum" being held in Toowoomba on 22–23 October, an event designed by young people, for young people.
25-year-old Jacob said stepping into leadership at a young age can come with plenty of responsibility and a sense of isolation.
A fifth-generation farmer, Jacob returned to the family farm in 2023 after studying agribusiness and management, working locally in the dairy industry, and spending time in protective cropping in Victoria.
He now works alongside his parents Jamie and Melita, and sister Jess growing conventional and Certified Organic fresh produce in North Queensland in a joint venture with Kalfresh Vegetables, with a focus on regenerative agriculture and bringing new technology into the business.
Jacob hopes the forum will help other young people build relationships beyond their own family businesses.
“Horticulture can be highly competitive, so it’s been encouraging to see such a strong response to the initiative."
Jacob said one of the biggest challenges for young growers is “backing themselves, particular when technology is moving quickly and that’s making it harder to draw on the experience of those who came before.”
Kalfresh is proud to be an event sponsor and encourages other businesses to get behind it. For info 👇
