Sometimes itā€™s the small thingsā€¦

ā€¦that give us the greatest satisfaction.

We try to recycle and reuse as much as possible at Five Sticks. Everything seems to have more than one life around here, which makes it very hard to throw anything away ā€” hence we have a very large garage full of things that might be useful one day!

I think weā€™ve been carrying these old coffee sacks around for at least 10 years. And finally, their day has come!

This week weā€™ve repurposed them into tree guards for a whole lot of new planting ā€” another 300+ native trees and plants now in the ground. šŸŒ±

100% free, biodegradable and out of the garage šŸ™Œ

Winter at Five Sticks Farm isnā€™t about hibernating.

Itā€™s about getting ahead on all those jobs weā€™ve been putting off, lighting the burn piles and gathering with friends and family as the sun disappears behind the mountains.

There are always stories to tell, plenty of laughter and usually someone staying long after they said they were leaving.

These are the nights that become our happiest memories.

And honestly, we wouldnā€™t have winter any other way. šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

ā„ļøWinter finally arrivedā„ļø

It was just 1Ā°C this morning, with a light frost across the paddocks and ice on the windscreen for the first time this year.

On our way to the gym, we were treated to this magical scene just a few kilometres from the farm on the Kalang River. A lone fisherman was already out chasing the first bites of the day, surrounded by mist rising gently from the water and the dawn chorus of birds welcoming a new day.

No matter how many times we drive this road, this view never fails to inspire. This morning was especially magical šŸ¤

My new favourite follow: .

Whilst Iā€™m busy doing my thing here in Australia (today itā€™s w**d management and bush regeneration), Iā€™m escaping into stories of Britainā€™s wonderfully eccentric rural charactersā€”people keeping forgotten crafts alive, farming in the most unlikely ways (including salt!), and quietly proving that not everything has to make sense to be worth doing.

I miss that uniquely British humour and outlook. If you love the countryside, curious people and old-world skills, youā€™ll probably enjoy this too. It's brilliant.

When our girls are laying, our guests get fresh eggs for brekkieā€¦ but one of our chooks is clearly going above and beyond.

This is the second egg this size in a couple of days. We honestly donā€™t know which hen is responsible, but sheā€™s obviously taking her job very seriously. šŸ„ššŸ„ššŸ„š

So grateful to call this place home.
From river and mountain landscapes to eucalypt forests and subtropical rainforest, through to the wetlands and wild, beautiful beaches of the Mid North Coastā€¦ā€¦and the winter light weaves a quiet kind of magic across it all. āœØ

A hugely inspiring and educational farm field day courtesy of Nambucca Valley Landcare and the incredible Brian Wehlburg from Inside Outside Management. With unprecedented rates of biodiversity decline and desert growth across the globe, there's never been a better time to dive into holistic land management.

The opportunity is hereā€”on our own land, in our own communitiesā€”to be part of the solution.

With the incoming Super El NiƱo and predictions of a prolonged period of hot and dry conditions, water diviner Peter Johnson had some very welcome news as we explore installing a bore on the property.
