"To live in the same ecosystem with mountain gorillas, we have to support the people who live around the protected areas." - Richard Rugaya, President of Gorilla Highlands Coffee (Uganda)β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

By working with frontline communities, we foster a community of inclusion where farmers learn to respect and care for the land for the many years to come. With people living in such close proximity to the mountain gorillas, sustained income is crucial in anti-poaching efforts, along with continuous education as to how to live alongside these creatures harmoniously. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

Did you know that there's a certain type of tea our farmers grow to help gorillas stay out of farms? The smell of the tea repels the gorillas, keeping them out of built up areas and avoiding conflict. This is just one of the many ways we support and work with our frontline communities that share the region with the mountain gorillas. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

Happy Thursday! We hope you're enjoying yourselves as much as this baby gorilla is enjoying hanging out in the trees and munching on some roots! Mountain gorillas are herbivores, eating things like roots, shoots, fruit, tree bark and pulp. How do we ensure only ripe cherries are picked?! That's easy! See that wristband in the photo?! We give our coffee farmers that wristband to wear, so they can compare the colour of the cherries to the colour of the red part of the band! We care about coffee quality and we care about our coffee farmers, which is why we only want ripe, red cherries picked! This ensures high quality coffee, minimises waste and gets our farmers the best price for their pickings!πŸ’ β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

Our coffee story is your coffee story! Your coffee comes from South-West Uganda, from 3 distinct coffee farming regions: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the Virunga Volcanic Region and Lake Bunyonyi. Without our coffee farmers, there's no us! That's why we work with and our partners in Uganda to run social and community projects that make sure the coffee farming community is taken care of! Do you know the difference between a single origin and a coffee blend? Single origin coffees can be different to a coffee blend in many different ways! Coffee blends will comprise of a mix of beans from different regions, so it can be hard to tell what farm your coffee is coming from, and which country most of your coffee is actually from. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

It's Clean Up Australia this Sunday 7th of March! There are a stack of ways you can support this day - you can join one of the many community events already organised, make your own event if there aren't any near you or simply help spread the word! We've got so many animals here in Aus and it's so important for us to keep the rubbish out of their habitat! It's especially important at the beaches, keeping plastic out of the ocean to help protect the sea turtles and all other endangered marine animals.

If you're in Sydney, leave a comment or send us a DM to see if we can attend the same clean up event!

Don't forget, everyday we should be keeping our environment clean -- we can easily pick up rubbish we see on the side of the road, keep bringing our reusables when we head out and stop with the single-use plastic! πŸŒπŸ’šβ™»οΈ Let us know what you're getting up to this Clean Up Australia Day! πŸ‘‡πŸ½

The second step in the coffee making process - picking the ripe coffee cherries! The first step is of course planting the coffee plant (Arabica or Robusta being the main two coffee plants used for the coffee we drink everyday). It can take 3-5 years after planting for the fruit to begin to ripen - once the cherries start turning from green to red they're ready for the pickin'. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

All our coffee is grown with the environment in mind, taking steps to make sure our coffee production doesn't harm the environment, and has a focus on long-term β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

What does the 'life on land' SDG look like for Gorilla Highlands Coffee? β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

🌍 We say 'no' to clearfelling (no clearing of land for our coffee!)β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
🌍 We incorporate the ideas of intercropping to make best use of the land- our coffee farms also have banana trees, maize (corn), avocado, and other types of crops to minimise land waste. I.e. No monoculture with just a single crop.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
🌍 We grow our coffee in the shade-grown manner, meaning no chemicals or pesticides in your cup of coffee.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
🌍 We have Fiscus trees in our coffee farms, which are bird-friendly for the many bird species of the region β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

We believe life on land is such an important SDG to abide by, especially in the industry. We're happy to say our farmers respect the land they grow on, and are thinking long-term of the land for not only us, but generations to come. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

What a view! Stunning photo from capturing the volcanic region of the Virunga National Park. There are 8 major volcanoes in this region, which spans across Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. πŸŒ‹β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

The Virunga region is also a region where one of our most popular coffee blends is grown! The rich soil and high altitude in this unique region give the coffee a distinct bourbon flavour. Have you tried the Virunga yet?! Let us know your thoughts. πŸ‘‡πŸΎβ˜•οΈβ €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

A close up of a silverback mountain gorilla during a trek at the National Park! Bwindi was named a National Park in 1991 and in 1994 was listed as a UNESCO National World Heritage Site. About 20,000 people visit the National Park per year (pre-covid times of course!). The revenue generated from organised gorilla-tracking activities at Bwindi is critical for preserving the park and the highly-endangered mountain gorilla species. We sure hope we can get to Bwindi once international travel is back on the cards, who is with us?!πŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ¦β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β € β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
