The sugar industry has a rich history in Northern New South Wales, having played a large role in the community for over one hundred years. A number of sustainable facilities play a role in the manufacturing of our products, with three mills located in the Tweed, Richmond and Clarence River areas, and a further refinery in the Clarence River area. Spring is a busy time across our cane-growing regions 🌱🚜

While the harvest continues, next season’s crop is already getting underway — with newly planted and ratooning cane making the most of warmer days and longer daylight.

It means that at any one time, our local growers can be harvesting mature cane, preparing fields, planting and nurturing new growth for the season ahead.

It’s all part of the annual sugarcane cycle — and a great reminder of just how much is happening in our cane fields at this time of year. 💛

As busy as it can be on a cane farm, there’s always room for some family time in the field.

We snapped this great photo of the Walsh family enjoying a cool break together. There’s nothing quite like an icy pole on a hot afternoon.

It’s one of the things they love about cane farming, the opportunity to have family alongside you while you work and share in everyday life on the farm.

Sometimes, family time looks a little different out here. Just the way we like it. 🌱

This World Food Day, we’re celebrating just how much can come from one crop. 🌱

Sugarcane is an important source of food, but its story doesn’t end with sugar. From renewable energy generated using bagasse to valuable co-products and the regional jobs and businesses supported by our industry, there’s so much more to cane.

Behind it all are our growers, mill teams and communities working together to make the most of every crop.

This , we’re proud to celebrate the people, produce and possibilities growing right here in our region.

From growing and harvesting to research, operations and supporting farming families, women contribute across every part of our industry and help shape its future.

What a turnout for our first Grower Connect session!

It was fantastic to welcome so many growers last week, including a group from the Clarence who even organised a bus to join us.

A big thank you to the team from Asahi Beverages for coming along and spending time with the growers and millers behind the sugar they buy.

It was especially rewarding to hear quality, reliability and service highlighted as key reasons Asahi chooses Sunshine Sugar — a great reflection of the work that happens across our industry every day.

Meet Greg.

With more than 40 years at Harwood Mill, Greg has seen the sugar industry evolve and has been part of the team every step of the way.

After joining Sunshine Sugar in 1979, Greg worked across a wide range of roles including the day gang, sugar ship loading, cane sampling, weighbridge operations and the milling train, before moving into the boiler station in 1989. Today, he's one of our highly respected Steam Operators, bringing decades of experience and knowledge to one of the mill's most critical operations.

If you've ever stopped by the boiler station, you'll know there's no such thing as a quick chat with Greg. Whether he's sharing stories from his years at the mill or the latest fishing tale about the one that didn't get away, he's always happy to have a yarn.

What Greg is perhaps best known for, though, is his passion for passing on his knowledge. He's played an important role in mentoring and training the next generation of boiler operators, ensuring the skills and experience built over decades continue well into the future.

People like Greg are the heart of Sunshine Sugar. Their dedication, resilience and willingness to invest in others help keep our mills and our industry strong.

Thank you, Greg, for more than 40 years of outstanding service. Your contribution to Harwood Mill has left a lasting legacy, and we're grateful to have you as part of the team.

Meet the Pye family 🌱

Raffy, Arnie and Oz are growing up with some pretty special role models — their dad, Max, and Poppy, Geoff.

Both work incredibly hard on the family farm, dedicating their time and energy not only to their family, but to the agricultural industry they’re proud to be part of.

To Raffy, Arnie and Oz, though, they’re also the ones giving the best cuddles, sharing special stories and showing the next generation what life on the land is all about.

We’re proud to celebrate the families behind our local sugar industry. 💛

What happens to the parts of sugarcane that don’t become sugar? 🌱⚡

They can help power the mill.

When sugarcane is crushed, the fibrous material left behind is called bagasse. Rather than treating it as waste, Australian sugar mills can use it as a renewable fuel to generate steam and electricity.

It’s one of the ways the sugar industry makes more from every part of the cane while reducing waste.
