Before you plant anything—stop.

Observe first.

Because what you don’t see at the start is what usually causes problems later.

Pay attention to:
– where the sun hits (and for how long)
– how water moves when it rains
– which areas stay dry
– where the wind comes from
– what’s already growing well (and what’s not)

These patterns are already there.

They’re telling you what will work—and what won’t.

Most people skip this step and go straight to planting.

And then spend months (or years) fixing avoidable mistakes.

Good design starts with observation.

Not action.

In this garden, just outside our kitchen window, which is Zone 1 in Permaculture speak, we have;
Oregano, Sage, Parsley (curly & Italian), Lemongrass, Thyme, Rhubarb, Turmeric, Rosemary, Cardamom, Basil, Warrigal Spinach, Malabar (climbing) Spinach, French Tarragon, Cress, Cat Nip, Dill, and a Blueberry Bush. Most are in pots because they have individual watering requirements + we can move them at any time, if need be.
We are in a cool temperate zone on the far south coast of NSW, Australia. The garden is situated on the south side of the house and gets a good amount of sun throughout the day.

I collected all of my packets of out-of-date flower seeds that would normally be sown at this time of year, poured their contents into a jar, then went out into the garden and threw them to the wind. I’m truly hoping for a flower meadow. Let’s see what happens 😊

This is my ‘How not to starve if the fuel situation really does turn to sh*t’ planting guide. 🤪

Step 1
Created a 4 bed rotation guide

Step 2
Made a list of all the annual plants we like to eat

Step 3
Categorised plants according to their nutrient requirements (heavy feeders, light feeders etc) and ideal planting season

Now to put that plan in action … 👩🏼‍🌾🪏🌱🥕

My purple salvia bush was buzzing this morning - full of blue-banded bees! Bees just love the colour purple, and I have plenty of it in my garden.
Blue-banded bees are super-fast so very hard to capture on camera, but still a delight to listen to.
I hope you enjoy the hummmmmmmm 💜💙

A flower garden is coming!!
This is the next big job here on Faraway Farm - reinvigorating the old veggie garden.
All the surrounding infrastructure that we put in 14 years ago is now collapsing, so we’re getting rid of it. All the netting will be removed. We’re just hoping the wildlife doesn’t go too crazy for the flowers we’re about to grow.
The reason that we gave up on the veggie garden is because we didn’t want to spare the water that was required to keep it up. We have veggies growing elsewhere in raised beds so we’ll just focus on the upkeep of them. One lesson we’ve learned over the years is just how much water it takes to grow annual vegetable crops. So with increasing droughts due to climate change, we want to grow smarter. And because flowers aren’t food crops, we can water them with our grey water. Plus, who doesn’t need more flowers in their lives? 🌺🌼🌻🌹🪻🌸🌷🌺

🏆 2026 Champion Fermented Drink Exhibit 🏆
at the 150th Bega Show
🥇 1st Place in Kombucha with our Watermelon & Mint Kombucha
🥈 2nd Place in Kombucha with our Ginger Kombucha
🥇 1st Place in Other Fermented Drink with our Plum Kombucha Shrub

We’re so chuffed to have received these awards. It’s just the loveliest feeling knowing that other people enjoy the flavours of our drinks. 🥰

Our base kombucha recipe and our traditional kombucha-making methods have remained the same all these years; the only thing that ever changes (with the seasons) are our flavours when we do our 2nd ferment. 🍉

Our kombucha shrubs only ever get made when we have an over-abundance of fruit or upon request. This particular Plum Shrub was made especially for to quench the thirsts of all those attending the Cobargo Folk Festival. Thereafter, it will be available from The Nourished Sovereign in Moruya until sold out. Follow them on Insta for specific locations. ✌🏼

You can enjoy our kombucha at any of the following locations;
Cafe Evolve, Bega
Candelo Bulk Wholefoods, Bega
Red Cafe, Bega

Set your body to ‘Rest & Digest’ mode whilst eating by activating your parasympathetic nervous system. Put your screens away, turn the TV off, and forget the chaos of the world. Take a few deep breaths, relax, and invite in the calm. Give gratitude for your food then enjoy each morsel. This practice lets your body know that you are safe and that it’s okay to go ahead and digest the food thoroughly.
Being in a stressed state does not allow for the proper digestion of food and its nutrients. Over time, this can cause all manner of digestive tract and malabsorption issues.
Make space for meals.

Climbing Spinach
I’m attempting to grow as many edible perennial plants as I can. They are much less demanding than annuals, I find. This perennial climbing spinach is one of them. Just pick the succulent leaves off and use in the same way you would spinach. It’s delicious!

So I took a moment to sit out in my garden … then wrote down what I experienced.

It’s so quiet … and yet not. I hear the constant drone of the bees, a fly buzzes past, the flutter of wings of the butcher bird that just flew past about a metre from my face. He’d flown over to the water station I’d just filled. I hear the bell miners, a distant dog bark, followed by my dog’s bark, the trickle of water from my pond, a lyrebird, more birds I don’t recognise, a wonga pigeon, a currawong, the whistle of the breeze through the leaves, another fly buzzes around, the tin on the shed creaks as the sun heats it up. I see the angophora blossoms falling like tiny snow flakes as a gentle breeze hits, and the bees come and go from their hive. I hear a door shut. A bower bird’s wings flutter as it lands on the tin shed’s roof. It squawks. Another lands in the trees nearby. The butcher bird sings its morning song. What bliss it is to be enveloped in nature! A long exhale 😮‍💨

Mmmmmmm that’s better 🥰
