Part 2, what to do right now? In the first phase (the "doorstep" phase) we should all be doing 2 things: 1) learning all we can about Varroa in SE QLD, and 2) testing our hives to detect Varroa. Once detected there is a period of slow growth (anywhere from 6 to 18months) where numbers slowly increase. This is not the time to panic and start throwing chemicals at the hive. Learn, watch, test and understand what is going on. There is some hive management techniques we can use to slow the spread, I'll talk about those in another post. This link is to the Australian Varroa Program and has tons of useful information.

Education and TrainingEducation and training is a key part of the National Varroa Mite Management Program. Through this program, online and face to face training is being delivered nationally, along with a range of resources, to support beekeepers and pollination-reliant industries in the management...

OK Bee friends, I'll take this very slowly as there seems to be a lot to take in. Firstly Varroa has been detected in SE QLD, No, you hives are not going to die tomorrow. Yes, it will change the way we manage our bees a bit. There are 4 phases of this, the first being no mites anywhere near us, that boat has sailed. The second, where we are now, is the initial infestation phase, the third is the boom phase where all the hives in an area are infested including yours, your neighbours, commercial operations and feral hives in the bush. We are not there yet but this boom lasts a few years and is where pest management is at it's highest (but manageable). The last phase is after the boom where we settle into a somewhat comfortable, manageable phase where beekeeping is largely business as usual. Some people are overwhealmed by this prospect and have decided to abandon beekeeping (their choice, I don't blame them, and actually applaud them for making a decision not to ignore the problem). I have decided to grab the tiger by the tail and actively manage my bees through this pest. I am happy to support my friends if they decide to come along with me. (to be continued).
