Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm Broome’s working pearl farm open to the public. Discover the Kimberley coast with Australia’s pearling pioneers. 200km/2.5hrs north of Broome.
(460)

Tucked away at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome, Cygnet Bay offers a few surprises to travellers. At the end of an unsealed driveway lies a small and vibrant community, established over 75 years ago by the Brown family as the land base for Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. The Brown family are true pioneers of the West Australian cultured pearl industry, introducing the first non-lugger to th

e Broome pearling fleet and the first 'ho**ah' divers to the industry. Lyndon Brown was also the first non-Japanese person to successfully master the art and science of the cultured Australian pearl. Today, Cygnet Bay is one of only three remaining commercial pearl farms in WA, and is in its third generation of ownership and operation by the Brown family. Our pearling crew works year round to ensure the best conditions for our Pinctada Maxima shell, culminating in our annual pearl harvest. Of the countless beautiful Broome pearls harvested over the past 50 years, one in particular stands out - the world's largest fine quality round pearl, measuring in at 22.24mm in diameter and harvested at Cygnet Bay in 2004. This is a once in a lifetime achievement for a pearl farmer, and the pearl remains in the Brown family's private collection, on display in the Cygnet Bay Pearls showroom in Broome. Visit Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm for one of our pearl farm tours, a Sea Safari along the spectacular coastline or to buy pearls direct from the farm at our showroom. Our accommodation and licensed restaurant makes Cygnet Bay the perfect base for your trip to the Dampier Peninsula!

A special reunion at Cygnet Bay. 🤍

Bruce Brown with his lifelong friend and former Cygnet Bay colleague, Andrew Sampi. 🫶

Andrew worked at Cygnet Bay many years ago and has remained a dear friend of the Brown family ever since. A true gentleman and respected community leader, he is one of the many people whose connection to this place stretches back through the decades.

In our 80th year, it’s pretty special to see old friends back together at the farm and to celebrate the people and relationships that are such an important part of Cygnet Bay’s story 🙏

A pretty special first look at our new timeline. 🤍

With Alison Brown’s sisters visiting Cygnet Bay this week, they had the chance to see the first installed section and look back over the people, moments and stories that have shaped Cygnet Bay across 80 years.

As Aunty Bobbie put it, “It’s amazing to think that my sister was such a part of the story.”

Alison’s own chapter is an important one. Known as Australia’s “First Lady of Pearls”, she was part of a generation that helped shape life and pearling at Cygnet Bay, later sharing her story in her memoir, About a Girl, About a Pearl.

It feel really special that we have created a timeline to preserve our history and then watching Alison’s sisters stop, reflect and see the part their sister played in that story brought to life. 🤗

If you’d like to read more of Alison’s story, About a Girl, About a Pearl is available to purchase online, at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm and from our Broome Showroom.

We can’t wait to share more of the finished timeline soon!

Some very special visitors at Cygnet Bay this week. 🤍✨

With Alison’s sisters and family making the trip to the farm, there’s been plenty of time for catching up, reminiscing and enjoying this beautiful part of the Kimberley together. 🫶

And of course, a visit to Cygnet Bay wouldn’t be complete without getting out on the water, including a trip to experience Waterfall Reef!

It’s been so lovely having the family back at the farm, particularly during such a special year as we celebrate 80 years of Cygnet Bay.

Happy World Oyster Day 🦪

Most people know Cygnet Bay for our pearls, but the oyster is where every pearl begins!

For 80 years, our team has worked with the Australian South Sea pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, caring for each shell in the waters of the Kimberley and working with the tides, seasons and natural rhythms of this remarkable place. ✨

The oyster also produces pearl meat, a rare delicacy that visitors can sample during our Pearl Farm Harvest Tours at Cygnet Bay and our Broome Showroom. It also features on the Homestead Restaurant menu when available.

Today, we’re celebrating the oyster behind the pearl, the living animal at the heart of our farm, our history and everything we do.

Helen Rose and Kevin Jones will be joining us at Cygnet Bay from 5-9 August, playing each afternoon between 3pm and 6pm, with Happy Hour running from 3pm to 5pm. 🍻

Visiting from Wardandi/Bibbulmun Country in the South West, Helen brings a love of smooth jazz standards and songs about the moon, caring for one another and looking after the world around us. Kevin is a multi-instrumentalist and freelance musician who plays across a range of genres and spends part of each year here on beautiful Bardi Country. 🧡

Settle in with a cold drink, enjoy the afternoon light and let them provide the soundtrack.
