Tucked away at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome, Cygnet Bay offers a few surprises to travellers. At the end of an unsealed driveway lies a small and vibrant community, established over 75 years ago by the Brown family as the land base for Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. The Brown family are true pioneers of the West Australian cultured pearl industry, introducing the first non-lugger to the Broome pearling fleet and the first 'ho**ah' divers to the industry. Lyndon Brown was also the first non-Japanese person to successfully master the art and science of the cultured Australian pearl. Today, Cygnet Bay is one of only three remaining commercial pearl farms in WA, and is in its third generation of ownership and operation by the Brown family. Our pearling crew works year round to ensure the best conditions for our Pinctada Maxima shell, culminating in our annual pearl harvest. Of the countless beautiful Broome pearls harvested over the past 50 years, one in particular stands out - the world's largest fine quality round pearl, measuring in at 22.24mm in diameter and harvested at Cygnet Bay in 2004. This is a once in a lifetime achievement for a pearl farmer, and the pearl remains in the Brown family's private collection, on display in the Cygnet Bay Pearls showroom in Broome. Life at Cygnet Bay looked a little different back then. 🤍

When Bruce Brown first arrived at Cygnet Bay in 1967, there was no running water, no modern comforts and a whole lot of pioneering spirit.

Life was simple. Fish caught from the ocean, vegetables grown in the garden and days spent building a life and a pearl farm on the remote Kimberley coast.

What was everyday life for the Brown family would become part of an extraordinary Australian pearling story.

As we celebrate 80 years of Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, we're sharing some of the stories and memories that shaped the place we know today.

There’s more to a pearl oyster than the pearl. 🦪
October is Seafood Month, and there’s one delicacy particularly close to home for us: pearl meat.
Produced by the Australian South Sea pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, pearl meat is incredibly rare and one of the lesser-known parts of the pearling story.

Guests can sample a taste during our Pearl Farm Harvest experiences at Cygnet Bay and our Broome Showroom, learning a little more about the oyster that sits at the heart of everything we do.

And when available, you may also find pearl meat on the menu at our Homestead Restaurant overlooking the bay.

Pearls may be what we’re famous for, but the oyster itself has quite a story to tell.

A tale of two pearl farms, spanning 80 years, and a story that continues to grow. 🦪✨️

For 80 years, our story has been shaped by remarkable places.

It began at Australia's Pearling Pioneers where generations of the Brown family have farmed the waters of the Kimberley, surrounded by mangroves, coral reefs and open ocean in Australia's North West

Decades later, that story travelled across the country to Pearl Farm Tours on the NSW Central Coast on the Love Central Coast NSW where a different species of pearl oyster thrives in a completely different environment, producing its own distinctly Australian pearl 🦪

Two farms. Two oysters. Two extraordinary marine environments. And today, one growing Australian Grown Pearl Jewellery Australia story.

As Biodiversity Month comes to a close, it feels fitting to share a story so deeply connected to the places our pearls come from, while celebrating just how far that story has travelled in 80 years. 🙌✨️

World Tourism Day feels particularly special in our 80th year 🤍

For most of Cygnet Bay’s history, this was simply a working pearl farm on a remote stretch of the Dampier Peninsula.

When we opened our gates to visitors, it gave us the opportunity to share so much more than how an Australian South Sea pearl is grown. We could share the history of Cygnet Bay, the people behind it, the incredible waters that surround us and the stories of this place.

Over time, that has grown into something we’re incredibly proud of. 🫶

Today, guests can step inside a real working pearl farm, head out on Sea Safaris to experience the Giant Tides and Waterfall Reef, join cultural experiences led by people with deep connections to Country, venture towards Horizontal Falls, stay overnight under the Kimberley sky, or sit at the old Homestead overlooking the bay and simply take it all in.

What began as a humble pearl farm has become a place where so many stories meet... our family story, the story of Australian pearling, stories of Country and culture, and the stories of the people who come to visit us.

We often say that when you come to Cygnet Bay, hear our story and spend time with us, you become a little part of our story too. 🫶🦪

On World Tourism Day, we’re grateful for every person who has made the journey north, every guide and team member who has shared this place with others, and every partner who has helped us tell its stories along the way.

80 years of Cygnet Bay ✨️🦪

For eight decades, our story has been shaped by the tides, the Kimberley, the people who have called this place home and the extraordinary Australian South Sea pearl.🤍

From an isolated pearl farm with no power, television or even flywire, to the place Cygnet Bay is today, much has changed.

But some things haven’t.

Pearling still asks us to work with nature, not against it. Every harvest carries the story of the ocean and the years that came before it. And every pearl we grow has the potential to carry that story for generations to come.

As we celebrate 80 years of Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, we celebrate the people, place, knowledge and persistence behind those years, and the privilege of continuing an Australian pearling legacy that began here in 1946.

Here’s to the next chapter. 🤍

Liz came over from Pearl Farm Tours on the NSW Central Coast to lend a hand at Cygnet Bay… and apparently she’s already started making changes. 😂

Between all the very hard work, pool time and the occasional well-earned b**r, she’s also been helping spread the word that you can now camp at Cygnet Bay from just $30 a night!!!

Cygnet Bay is surrounded by an incredible natural world, with wildlife sharing the coastline, waters and skies around the farm every day.

Sometimes it’s right beside us. Sometimes you have to look a little closer.
