Our chooks are curious little creatures, and we love keeping them challenged!

This week’s addition: a play bale and hanging feed, giving the girls something to peck, scratch and climb.
We love this because it’s simple, keeps them busy and rewards them with treats 🥬

A little update from our chooks 🌱

This week the bird-safe netting went up to close off gaps in the enclosure and the girls are busy exploring their new outdoor space!

Swipe to see the space and a quick summary of why we’re making these changes 👉

With bird flu detections moving closer to Victoria, we’ve taking some extra steps to protect our flock while still giving them the outdoor time they love 🐔🌱

This weekend our volunteers are building enclosed outdoor runs and sealing gaps spaces with bird-safe netting to ensure wild birds have fewer opportunities to visit our chooks. These temporary runs will let our girls continue scratching, dust bathing and exploring outdoors while reducing contact with wild birds.

As part of these precautions, feeding the chooks through the fence may not be possible. We know how much joy it brings to connect with our flock, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding while we prioritise keeping them healthy and safe! 💚

Hen’s Nest by John Clare

Among the orchard weeds, from every search,
Snugly and sure, the old hen’s nest is made,
Who cackles every morning from her perch
To tell the servant girl new eggs are laid;

Who lays her washing by, and far and near
Goes seeking all about from day to day,
And stung with nettles tramples everywhere;
But still the cackling pullet lays away.

The boy on Sundays goes the stack to pull
In hopes to find her there, but naught is seen,
And takes his hat and thinks to find it full,
She’s laid so long so many might have been.
But naught is found and all is given o’er
Till the young brood come chirping to the door.

HAPPY EASTER
It’s easter everyday at Ceres! Our new 6 month old hens have started laying mini egglets 🥚✨
Egg fact: The record for the most eggs laid in one day by a single chicken is seven!

🐣 We’re very excited to be welcoming some new birds to the flock! 🐣

Our chicks are only two weeks old, as they grow they’ll stay with various members of the group before they are big enough to join the full flock.

The black Australorp/New Hampshire Cross birds are called a ‘utility breed’, because they lay so well and are easy to care for. We’re loving watching them grow in size and confidence as they start exploring. Aren’t they adorable 💛
