It’s always an awesome time of year at Hilltop.

Making pasatta with the haul of tomatoes and my special recipe all jarred up ready for the winter. But what are tomatoes without basil?

All of our basil has had three cuts from it! We mince it and put it in ice cube containers in freezer so that we’ve got heaps of cubes of basil to use in our cooking over the colder months.

Another big box of fresh food heading to the food shelf at Uniting Care Morwell today, along with plenty shared with neighbours and local families.

This season we’ve been incredibly fortunate at Hilltop Farm the chooks have been laying well, the bees have been generous and the garden beds have been overflowing with fresh vegetables.

Free eggs, honey and fresh produce heading out the gate and onto other people’s tables.

Over the past year we’ve also been putting in more garden beds so we can grow even more food to give away. It’s a small thing, but if you have the space to grow a little extra, it can make a real difference for someone else.

Fresh food shouldn’t be a luxury.

Community resilience starts in small places like our gardens, kitchens and neighbours helping neighbours.

We feel very lucky to be able to share

We finally had a bit of time this week to put up a new habitat box, this one sized for our little local owls. It’s now tucked high into our beautiful Strzelecki mother gum overlooking the gully like it’s always belonged there.

We hear boobooks calling around the property most nights, so we’re quietly hoping this cosy new home might tempt one to move in. It’s a small act but creating space for wildlife feels like the right kind of gift back to Country especially during this season.

Sometimes it really is a labour of love! However, how wonderful it feels to finally enjoy the fruits of that labour!

I planted several olive trees about six years ago and two years ago a couple of them finally began to produce fruit. I was thrilled… until I discovered that birds also love olives. Who knew?

Last season, I came prepared with nets. The harvest wasn’t huge, but it was ours and enough to fill a few jars. After sitting patiently in brine in the fridge for eight months, I rinsed and tasted them today. To my delight, they’re absolutely delicious!

I’ll savour my three small jars of homegrown olives and look forward to an even better harvest this season.
