Hi friends 🥰. My beautiful daughters and I will be fundraising this August for the National Breast Cancer Foundation Step Up for Breast Cancer program. We've all set big personal step goals which at least double our usual daily targets. Poppy and Pearl are running, Emily is walking and I'll be riding with a goal of 168kms for the month. For years, riding Cherokee felt hard.
As an adult learner, I spent so much energy trying to master the basics— keeping my own nerves in check, staying soft with my hands, and learning to be clear without being forceful. Some rides felt like one step forward and two steps back.
Lately, I've realised those feelings are becoming part of our past.
Our rides still aren't pertect, but somewhere along the way, consistency quietly built confidence. Instead of wondering what if something goes wrong, I trust that I have the tools to help us both find balance again.
And Cherokee has changed with me. She's offering moments of real softness, relaxation and connection that once felt so far away. I'm beginning to feel the muscle memory from all those hours in the saddle finally coming together.
It's a beautiful reminder that progress isn't usually dramatic. It grows one ride at a time.
The journey really is the reward.

I've been thinking a lot about slow progress and the "messy middle" lately.
For so long, I focused on what still wasn't there and my overwhelming feeling was frustration. My lope wasn't balanced or slow enough. My hands weren't quiet enough. My timing wasn't good enough.
There was always another thing to fix.
However recently I've noticed a shift within myself.
I'm learning how to be more patient and understanding with my process.
On the weekend I had an "aha" moment with Cherokee. Her lope felt slower and softer, and for a few moments I could simply sink into the saddle and move with her instead of trying to micromanage every step. There were some moments that felt effortless and like we were completely in sync with each other. These moments were absolute magic. I realised later how easy it can be to be blind to our own progress and not appreciate the small successes because we're so busy looking towards the next goal.
I'm beginning to believe that the real lesson isn't just learning to trust the process with our horses focussing upon our end goals, but to relax into enjoying it and noticing the tiny improvements.
