The Nutrien Commercial Ewe Hogget Competition was held over the weekend at the Jamestown Show and North Ashrose bloodlines demonstrated their value, winning both the stud and commercial sections for the second year in a row.

The aim of the Ewe Hogget competition is to promote the different bloodlines and styles of Merino sheep. There were 34 entries, all raised in similar climatic conditions from within an 80km radius of Jamestown. Each entry consisted of 3 ewe hoggets, shorn during the show. The fleeces were tested and weighed, and together with their bodyweight data and visual assessment, each pen of 3 was given a commercial value.

We commend the Jamestown Sheep & Wool Committee for providing such a great competition that highlights the importance of the commercial value of breeding Merino ewes - taking into consideration all traits for a producer's return on investment value. While breeding figures play a part in breeding programs, the commercial value is the true return on investment benchmark that producers should be seeking.

Congratulations to Ashley Dunsford, North Ashrose client of over 35 years, for winning the commercial section for the second year in a row.
