Norwood White Dorpers

Norwood White Dorpers Breeders of quality white dorper sheep - supplying all size operations from hobby farms to commercial properties.

Norwood White Dorpers is located in the Northern New England region of NSW, 35km south of Inverell. The stud was initiated in 2009 in a response to issues we noticed within the local industry - the ever increasing costs of running traditional breeds of sheep, namely borderline returns from wool at the time, the increasing cost of crutching and shearing, losses due to fly strike in traditional bre

eds of sheep and a large increase in the incidence of drench resistance in the New England region. Our foundation ewes were sourced from leading white dorper studs in New South Wales. Lambplan recorded Development phase sires were sourced from top tier studs from across Australia. Our aim is to produce structurally sound rams with good muscle and length - dual purpose maternal / terminal sires that offer high growth rates in your flock and are suitable for higher rainfall areas due to improved worm resistance and wool shedding. Breeding ewes are additionally selected for their shedding, worm resistance, mothering ability and twinning rates.

Checkout these thumping pasture finished lambs recently sent through the Guyra saleyards by Debbie & PJ Bradford, Armidale. They have been using Norwood rams for the past 4 years and the results speak for themselves. Congratulations Debbie & PJ on a great pen of lambs, we love seeing how well our genetics perform wherever they end up!

I know I recently posted about why we run Livestock Guardian Dogs —
but this morning was a clear example of the bond that forms between a dog and their stock. 🐑🐕

This is Zena — 6 months old and learning her role.
And this is Zeus — one of our White Dorper rams.

Our guardian dogs are not just “put in a paddock” and expected to work.

They must be bonded to their animals.
That bond is the foundation of everything. 🤝

In the early stages, it certainly helps when sheep have previously been raised with guardian dogs — they recognise the role and accept the presence.

Zeus didn’t grow up with Livestock Guardian Dogs — but sheep learn too.
They learn the dog is protection, not a predator.

Now look at the trust.
The calm.
The quiet confidence between them. 🌿

That doesn’t happen by accident.

It comes from structured training, supervision, timely correction, and consistent guidance.

The old mindset of “just throw them in and hope for the best” is exactly why so many guardian programs failed.

A young dog needs direction.
Clear boundaries.
Calm exposure.
Time.

When it’s done properly, you don’t just get a dog in a paddock.

You get partnership.
You get protection.
You get peace in your flock. 🛡️

And this — right here — is why we do it.

We've been quietly experimenting in the background with some composite breeding in recent years - these freshly weaned rams are really showing promise. Comprised of 90% white dorper/ 10% poll dorset they are beautifully put together rams just 12-13wks old and 51kg average, straight off native grass country. Can't wait to see how they grow out!
