We’ve all heard the saying “stuck between a rock and a hard place”, and we’ve probably often felt ourselves in this situation. It’s not just us that experience difficulties, even avocados do, but that doesn’t stop them, they just grow around them. So next time you think you’re stuck and think there’s no way out, think of the avo. There’s always some way forward, it just might not be the way you originally thought it would be.

Today we had a visit from Yeppoon Seaside QCWA group. As per usual for me, I forgot to take any photos so I took a photo of the lovely gift they gave us. Hopefully one of the ladies will see this post and share a photo they took.

We had a lovely morning tea and I got to get on my soap box about the importance of family farms. (Think I was preaching to the converted). It is always a pleasure to meet with those in our community who are willing to volunteer and give to the community. We had a quick drive around the farm and a look at some of our native bee hives to finish off the morning.

We’ve had yet another spectacular flowering on the dragon fruit. Bees just love the flowers and they are so beautiful - you just have to be an early riser to enjoy them.

The babies have “flown the coop”. We’ve been fortunate enough to have watched a couple of very industrious sun birds build their nest, lay their eggs and successfully raise 2 chicks. I even witnessed the fiercely protective parents harassing a kookaburra in a nearby poinciana tree not long before the babies were due to start flying lessons.

We started sending fruit to Graeme at Express Fruit in the 80s and first met Brendon and Greg when they were about the same age as Brooklyn and Caleb. The family have become like family to us. Our business would not be where it is today without this wonderful family. Congratulations on 50 Years to Sydney Markets but the markets wouldn’t be the markets without the McConnell family!

Today’s post is to share some information about a “crop” I knew very little about until recently. We have a number of Bunya Pines (Araucaria bidwillii) on the farm, some planted by us and some lovely old trees planted by the Evans family. Unfortunately we lost some of the biggest/oldest trees in cyclone Marcia but we still have some mature trees that produce cones and our younger trees are starting to produce.

This year appears to be a “mast” year where trees produce a bumper crop - the theory is this only happens every 4 or so years so that the trees can beat the cycle and build up of predators or nut eaters and there will be a surplus of nuts and some will germinate and produce new trees.

A little more about the Bunya Pines. They produce a very large version of the pine nuts we buy to add to salads and pestos. They may be the largest pine nut in the world. Many know about their popularity with Australian Aboriginals, and while I’ve tried eating them boiled before I wasn’t that impressed. This year we had quite a few and tried roasting some in the pizza oven. They were quite delicious. (Still a bit hard to “shell” or dehusk though). Thanks to David for the video and thanks to Peterson for dehusking the ones I ate!

As part of our farewell to our Vanuatu friends we had a Pizza Night. As is often the case, I didn’t take a single photo, but thanks to Danny I have some photos to share. Everyone had to “make their own. Lucky for us there were some left over ingredients so we cooked up some extras for the freezer for those days we need a quick and easy lunch.

One of the great things about having people who aren’t locals working on the farm is that we get to take them to some of the local attractions. Koorana Crocodile Farm was somewhere Ian and I hadn’t been since the 80s. What a great, very educational show they put on. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept us all safe and enthralled!! There were some very nervous and jumpy people when the snapping jaws of the crocs were just on the other side of what looked like a very flimsy fence.

We even all got to hold a croc!

Time to catch up on a few posts I just never got “a-round-to-it”.
First one is of our amazing Vanuatu/Thai/Japanese crew at the Singing Ship while doing a tour of the Capricorn Coast.
