A little bit of a history lesson on the sheep for those interested.

Question - Are babydolls a miniature breed?
Answer - No

Here's why 👇🏼

🐑The Southdown sheep were originally farmed in the UK, in the counties of Kent, Sussex and Dorsetshire.

In Australia, Southdowns can be dated back to the very beginning of the sheep industry in the 1800's.

Before modern refrigerators and freezers were invented, families who butchered sheep needed to consume them fairly quickly so almost all sheep from that era were much smaller, compared to today's standards.

As the population grew locally and meat safes and refrigerators became more prevalent, so did the appetite for larger framed sheep......more meat = more money!

Southdowns were bred "up" in size to cater for the Australian meat market and constitute the modern day "Southdown".

Fortunately, the Metcalf Brothers, continued to breed the "original" Southdown before eventually passing them on to Murray & Judy Peart who continued to breed them at their "Hillgrove" Stud in Central Victoria.

Hillgrove continues to breed some of the most sought-after bloodlines in Australia and a large proportion of babydoll sheep carry Hillgrove lineage.

The "Babydoll" name was formally adopted in Australia in 2020, and babydoll sheep now have their own section in the ASSBA flock registry, completely detached from the Southdown Sheep.

It was off to Riddells Creek yesterday to deliver the last of the 2025 drop wethers.

Thanks to Cameron & his wonderful family for trusting us to provide them with some quality lawn mowers.
