The process of selling your timber can involve a number of methods, the most common action for forest owners in Tasmania is by negotiating simultaneously with a number of potential buyers either directly, or via a broker/advisor, to arrive at the best price for the seller.

Your wood can be sold as standing or felled timber.

In general, timber processors value logs that have uniform characteristics. The amount paid to the forest owner is known as the stumpage. Stumpage excludes the costs for planning, harvesting and carting the forest products to a processing plant.

Choosing a tree species for your plantation is about finding a match between a tree and its ideal conditions. It should also align with your goals and farming operations.

If your main goal is to grow trees for wood production, a commercial species is right for you. If you want to grow trees for environmental outcomes, a conservation species is likely to be more suitable. Plantations can include a mixture of species to maximise the benefits for you and your farm.

Taking the time to understand the needs of your desired tree species and pairing it with your specific site and conditions is an important step in establishing a successful plantation and biodiversity benefits.

Private Forests Tasmania has released a new publication, 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, to support landowners in achieving successful forestry outcomes.

Successful tree establishment is the foundation of any forestry activity. However, there is no single prescribed approach to forestry establishment. Instead, best practice involves applying the most appropriate establishment techniques based on site conditions, seasonal factors, species selection and the individual objectives of the landowner.

The publication provides an overview of the key principles that underpin successful plantation establishment, offering practical guidance on planning and implementation. It also highlights how establishment techniques can vary depending on local circumstances, demonstrating the importance of tailoring management practices to suit specific sites and goals.

This resource is designed to help landowners make informed decisions and improve the success of their forestry establishment activities.

It is important to note, forestry activities, including establishment, must be conducted in accordance with the Forest Practices Code. The Code is available from the Forest Practices Authority and advice should be sought from a registered forestry consultant. 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐅𝐓'𝐬 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐲.

PFT's Agriforester Molly recently visited a landowner in Beaconsfield to discuss some of the different options to successfully establish commercial trees. Whilst there they also looked at some native forest and discussed future management options.

Understanding the landholder’s objectives allowed our Agriforester to provide resources on different options that met what the landholder wanted to achieve. With the landholder looking to establish several new plantings, it was important to him to understand how he can maximise the effort and investment. Through visiting some of the previous tree plantings, this allowed some back and forth about what worked well, what didn’t and the ways to improve the successfulness of plantings.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

Tasmania's farmers, forest landowners and rural communities are encouraged to have their say on the future operation of the Forest Practices Regulations, with public consultation now open.

The Regulations are made under the Forest Practices Act 1985 and form part of Tasmania's forest management framework.

The Regulations:
• specify circumstances where a forest practices plan is not required
• prescribe fees for forest practices plans
• prescribe fees for the establishment of private timber reserves.

Feedback is welcome on any aspect of the Regulations, particularly suggestions that:
• identify issues arising from the practical application of the Regulations
• improve the clarity and interpretation of the Regulations
• improve the practical operation of the Regulations
• support effective land management while meeting the requirements of the Forest Practices Act 1985
• reduce unnecessary complexity or administrative burden.

Submissions can be made by entering comments directly into the Submit Feedback section of the portal or by uploading a written submission.

Submissions will be published once consideration of the feedback provided has concluded, expected to be in July and August 2027.

As forest owners, we have a valuable asset to protect. From ensuring firebreaks are cleared and maintained to conducting fuel reduction burns, we all have a role to play in reducing bushfire risk. By taking action now, we can help make summer safer and ensure our assets, families, homes and communities are better prepared and protected.

Rural Youth Young Farmer of the Year 2026!

Congratulations to Will Lyon, Farm Manager at Elverton Pastoral, who won the 2026 Rural Youth Tasmania Young Farmer of the Year competition!

Private Forests Tasmania was pleased to support the competition for a third year running, this year preparing a module for finalists on carbon forestry.

Finalists were asked to use the Carbon Footprint Estimator Tool on PFT's website to answer questions about carbon emissions and sequestration on hypothetical farm scenarios.

They also were asked how a carbon forestry project could work on their own farm and for what purpose and outcomes they could implement this.

It was great to be able to showcase some of PFT's Carbon Forestry 101 project and resources with the next generation of farmers.

Last chance to RSVP to Carbon Forestry 101 at Brighton (TOMORROW)!

Tomorrow (Thursday 27 August), PFT is hosting its second Carbon Forestry 101 event at Brighton Hotel Motel for Tasmanian farmers and landowners. The free event commences at 4.00pm for a 4.30pm start and finishes around 6.00pm.

Following great feedback from our first event at Longford in mid-August, we are excited to be meeting new landowners at our second event.

Event attendees will work through the basics of carbon forestry including carbon science, carbon markets, carbon project governance and methodologies including the Plantation Forestry Method and the Environmental and Mallee Plantings Method. They will also receive specially developed resources which focus on simplifying the complex science and unpacking key jargon terms.

The event will support farmers thinking about the sustainability of their supply chains and explain how carbon forestry projects can demonstrate offsets from emissions generated on their farms.

Private Forests Tasmania is excited to share we have a new opportunity to join our team as our Forestry Specialist.

We are looking for a Forestry Specialist who can help provide technical forestry information to a range of stakeholders and to support the implementation of our strategic projects and priorities.

The Forestry Specialist is a key role in PFT's legislative role to facilitate and expand the development of the private forest resource in Tasmania in a manner which is consistent with sound forest and land management practices.

Carbon Forestry 101 hits FarmX

Private Forests Tasmania ran a Carbon Forestry 101 presentation and panel at TasFarmers second FarmX Conference and Expo.

Our Agriforester Molly shared a high level, 15-minute presentation about the carbon cycle, Plantation Forestry Methods and governance and then played the video we produced for the Tasmanian Forestry Hub.

We then hosted a panel to unpack some of the content Molly shared at a practical level. Our CEO Elizabeth presented on the panel.

Thank you very much to our external panellists, Dr Karen Christie-Whitehead from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, Felicity Richards, Tasmanian Beef Grazier and Dr Lachlan Johnson from the Tasmanian Policy Exchange.
