Historic Byramine Homestead, was built in 1842 by famous explorer Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law Elizabeth and her nine children after her husband John was killed by bushrangers. The homestead was designed by an English architect for use in India and built on a beautiful site by a lagoon on low sand hills, forested in Pine. The most unique aspect of the home is the octagonally shaped central

room called the fortress, which is was designed to provide a clear view of all angles in case of attach from bushrangers or aboriginals. Pine from the river forest was used for woodwork including the the ceilings, beams, floors, shutters and shingles. Elizabeth named her home 'Bryamine', meaning 'rustic retreat'.

You might know us for our craft beer — but this? This is our very own Shiraz. 🍇 A rich, homegrown drop bottled right here, poured within sight of the vines that made it.

And it's in good company: alongside our Shiraz you'll find a crisp white wine, boutique cider, and of course the craft beer we're known for — something for every palate.

A deeply disappointing end to what should have been a wonderful Father’s Day.

We are incredibly saddened to share that, following a beautiful Father’s Day at Byramine Homestead, we discovered two significant acts of vandalism on the property.

To say we are disappointed is an understatement.

Byramine Homestead is far more than a business or a venue. It is a treasured piece of our local history — a place that has stood for generations and one that we work incredibly hard to preserve, protect and share with our community and visitors.

To see any part of this property deliberately damaged is both heartbreaking and deeply upsetting. Acts such as these are not harmless or something we can simply brush aside. Damage to a historic property is a serious matter, and the impact extends well beyond the physical damage itself.

If you visited Byramine on Father’s Day and noticed anything unusual or suspicious, or if you have any information that may assist us, we ask that you please contact us privately. Even something that may seem insignificant could prove helpful.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to visit, respect and support Byramine Homestead. It is devastating that such a wonderful day with so many families enjoying this special place has ended on such a disappointing note.

Please respect our property, our history and the enormous amount of work that goes into preserving Byramine for future generations.

Then and now. 👀 Look closely — the same posts, the same roofline, the same view that greeted Elizabeth Hume's family generations ago.

But behind this peaceful verandah is a story of extraordinary courage. In 1840, Elizabeth's husband John was killed by bushrangers near Gunning. Widowed with nine children, she didn't give up — she packed up their lives and trekked overland to start again, right here at Byramine.

Nearly two centuries later, the house still stands. Because it was built to last — and so was she. 💪

Did you know? Byramine doesn't have a single square room. 🏛️

The eight-sided rooms weren't a design quirk — they were a defence. Octagonal walls gave clear sightlines in every direction, so the family could see trouble coming long before it reached the door. (And yes, Yesterday's guess was right: those walls really are close to a foot thick. Did you have the correct answer?)

Plot twist: your new favourite pub is 184 years old. 🍺⏳

Picture it — 1842. No Wi-Fi. No fridge. Bushrangers roaming the countryside like uninvited party guests. 😬

So when explorer Hamilton Hume built Byramine as a safe haven for his widowed sister-in-law Elizabeth (who was expecting baby number NINE 👶💦 — legend), he got creative and designed the rooms octagonal, so no sneaky bushranger could creep up unseen. Genius? Absolutely. Great for hide-and-seek? Also yes. 🙈

Fast forward to today and this National Trust treasure — the oldest surviving home in regional Victoria — has swapped drama for something far more civilised: cold beer, crisp cider, local wine, and scones roughly the size of your head. 🧁

Come for the history. Stay for the "just one more tasting." 😉🍻
