Today is National Wattle Day.

On our travels, we’ve learnt many different ways of making damper, and everyone seems to have a favourite. This is the version we return to most often, with roasted wattleseed mixed through the dough.

Last year, our friend and incredible artist, Phoebe Duff, drew this Exmouth prawn for the Dark Sky Festival.

We had the pleasure of working alongside Auntie Hazel Walgar of Bayungu Dreaming for our dinner as part of the festival. She reminded us that the Exmouth prawn comes from a significant place in the Exmouth Gulf, where prawns breed within a delicate ecosystem.

Professor Peter Veth writes “Cape Range preserves the remains of 40,000-year-old meals”, reminding us how long people have gathered food from these waters and the surrounding ranges.

We feel fortunate to still cook with ingredients that carry such deep connections to place. They remind us why these environments need our protection, so that many years from now, people may still enjoy their sweet flavour.

Our bags are packed and we’re ready to head north!

The Gascoyne is a celebration of diversity in its landscapes, its produce and the people who care for it. The Gascoyne Food Festival brings all of this together across the region.

Yoda recently had the pleasure of working alongside Chef Jess Roe of Petition, and is looking forward to experiencing her food from the other side of the table as we gather to celebrate some of the region’s remarkable growers and producers at The Plantation Feast.

Next week we’ll be at Gwoonwardu Mia, joining the Jardilunji Mia students in the kitchen as we prepare together for Fireside Yarns on Wednesday 26 August. We can’t wait to see the evening come together!

The Gascoyne first became familiar to Yoda through surfing. Over time, that connection has deepened through friendships and time spent there. Each time he returns, the landscape shows a different side of its beauty.⁠

We were captivated by the work Tristan McKenzie created with Gwoonwardu Mia, and by the way he captured the region and its people. Reflecting on his time there, Tristan said:⁠

“I knew the Gascoyne region had some spectacular scenery, but I didn’t fully grasp the scale and just how diverse the landscapes were until I was out there filming it.”⁠

Fireside Yarns begins with the students at Jardilunji Mia, who have been working towards this evening throughout their training.⁠

At Gwoonwardu Mia in Carnarvon, Yoda will spend the week alongside them as they prepare for the evening. It will be an opportunity for the students to share their knowledge, build confidence and celebrate the skills they have developed throughout their training.⁠

Hosted on Yinggarda Country, Gwoonwardu Mia is a place where stories, culture and connection are shared. We’re grateful to return and spend time with the students as they help bring the evening to life.⁠

One of our favourite parts of visiting the Ravensthorpe Wildflower show is seeing our friends, Sue and Colin.⁠

Sue is one of the show’s long-time coordinators, and they’ll be hosting us for Feast in the Fitz.⁠
⁠
They’re absolute legends. Both share a deep passion for this region and its environment, and have lived the kind of adventures most of us can only dream about.⁠
⁠
They embody the generosity and community spirit that makes this region so special.⁠
⁠
If you’re not planning a trip to the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show, you’re missing out, friends. The festival runs from 7–19 September, with wildflower displays, guided walks, tours, workshops and community events across the Fitzgerald Biosphere.⁠

We’ll be inviting guests to join us at the table for Feast in the Fitz on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September. Saturday is sold out, but a few places remain for Friday.⁠

Yoda first met Rennee many years ago, on his first visit to Gwoonwardu Mia. After hearing about her work, he connected with Rennee and immediately felt welcomed.

Rennee shares her knowledge with warmth, pride and care. One memory that has stayed with Yoda is the way she encouraged the students to pursue their passions and champion their culture, whether through hospitality or work on Country.

Last year, the Fervor team joined Rennee on a tour on our way to the Dark Sky Festival in Exmouth. Our little one still talks about the experience, with a small keepsake from that journey beside his bed. We think of that day often, and hold the memory dear.

If your travels take you through Carnarvon, make time for Wooramulla Eco Cultural Journeys. We can’t wait to see Rennee again soon.

The Gascoyne is full of small discoveries.

One of our most remarkable memories is meeting the burrowing bees, seasonal visitors that emerge between July and September.

Rennee was the first person to show us these extraordinary little creatures, and it was a remarkable sight. It’s the small details in a vast landscape that make all the difference—but we have to slow down to notice them, and remember to tread carefully.
