Well there’s a first time for everything!!!

Danika was due to have her babies and I had been keeping a close eye on her for days. One minute there are no signs of labour and an hour later there were two gorgeous kids on the ground, already dry.

I picked up the kids to check their s*x and spray their umbilical cord, and that’s where the confusion started. The darker kid was male and the lighter one was ??? A quick call to the vet confirmed that we have a hermaphrodite (inters*x). Very unusual, especially when both Danika and Brick have had multiple kids before.

Now I need to find a suitable name for him and them. The theme for Brick’s kids is gemstones.

And just like that our Spring birthing season has finished.

Lillyfield Diesel & Dust is a very handsome dark fawn male with an outstanding frame, an even dense fleece, an advanced crimp style and gentle temperament. Diesel was mated to 11 of our lovely white,fawn, brown and roan girls and we have been blessed with 9 healthy crias, 5 female and 4 male.

And if we were ever worried about getting too many fawn crias, we needn’t be as we got anything but!

Introducing Gumnut Valley Lysandra 🩷

We’re grateful for the safe arrival of Lysandra, who was born at the crack of dawn this morning.

Bases on 351 days gestation Dam Aymara Lacey was due first this birthing season but after keeping her cria hostage for 372 days she was the last to unpack. Her last cria was born after 377 days, so this is nothing new for Lacey.

In the past week Lacey became lethargic and didn’t want to eat and was treated for pregnancy toxemia.

Lysandra was sired by Lillyfield Diesel & Dust and weighed a modest 7.4kg. With two fawn parents and nothing darker than a light brown 5 generations down the line, this dark brown female sure is a surprise!

Our Nigerian Dwarf doe Chanel gave us three gorgeous doelings on 27 August. Sadly she only feeds one, so the other two are bottle fed.

Now 4 weeks old, Onyx, Sapphire and Opal are superfriendly, cheeky, loving and playful kids who love a cuddle and adore people. They have had their first vaccination with a second due at 8 weeks.

Sapphire and Opal are now on 3 bottles a day and available for adoption to the best home only. With the school holidays this is the perfect time for kids and goats to bond.

Please message me for more info. Onyx is not available as she will be retained for future breeding. We’re located in Butterwick (15 min north of Maitland)

Introducing Gumnut Valley Nathanael 🩵

Another day another drama at Gumnut Valley 😞

At 6am we noticed Yenaminut Nallene had unpacked a healthy little male. Problem being that she also delivered her entire uterus.

Our first prolapse and it required immediate vet intervention. Many thanks to Darcy & Kyle from Morpeth Vet After Hours for putting Nallene’s insides back in place.

Nallene was due 4 October and in line with Marian’s Penrith Panthers due to line up in the NRL Grand Final, her cria is aptly named Nathanael.

Sired by Lillyfield Diesel & Dust, ‘Nate’ arrived after 341 days gestation and weighed 6.6kg. He had to be syringe fed colostrum while his Mumma was out for the count and slow to wake. Thankfully both Mum and Bub are doing well, but Nallene is now retired from breeding.

Introducing Rose Quartz 🩷 and Smokey Quartz 🩵 born yesterday

Our roller coaster keeps on rolling on. Nigerian dwarf doe 🐐 Olive had twice before been put in the romance paddock with our loan buck ‘Brick’ and both times she didn’t fall. Just when we were wondering if she may have any reproductive issues, she came on heat and Brick was only too happy to oblige and 5 months later she delivered a beautiful pigeon pair.

Yesterday was also our beautiful friend and volunteer Kerry’s birthday, who unexpectedly passed away on 2 August this year. Kerry loved crystals & gemstones, with Rose Quartz her favourite. Therefore it seems fitting to welcome Rose Quartz (Roxy) 🩷 and Smokey Quartz (Smokey) 🩵 to the farm.

Roxy weighed 1.7kg and Smokey 1.3kg. It took a few hours to get them both to confidently access to milk bar and they have already gained weight overnight!

Our worst fear became reality today after we had a dog attack on our property early this morning 💔

Our beautiful Nelly was attacked on her back side and hind legs and required immediate veterinary intervention. Luckily she should make a full recovery.

Despite this terrible scare we feel very fortunate we haven’t lost any animals and realise it could have been very different, as our crias were only recently weaned and moved into another paddock.

The vet said Nelly had delivered at least one kick with impact as he found tissue between her toenails.

It’s incredibly sad that our animals can no longer feel safe on our farm because some people either don’t contain their dogs or dump them when they no longer want them 😡
