🇮🇩 A taste of Indonesia on Turrbal and Jagera Country 🌺🍽️
I had the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful spread of Indonesian food while here in Meanjin (Brisbane) spending time with my friends.
Nasi Kuning, Gulai Babi, Ayam Goreng, Choko Curry, Sayur, Ikan Bilis, Curry Puff, Prawn Crackers and Peyek Kacang — a plate full of flavour, culture and tradition. 😍
As a Torres Strait Islander chef, what makes this experience even more meaningful is recognising the Indonesian and broader Southeast Asian influences that are woven into Torres Strait Islander cuisine today. Our islands have long been places of movement, trade, seafaring and cultural exchange, and you can see those connections reflected in the way we use curry, coconut, chilli, rice, seafood, spices and other flavours in our cooking.
Some of the flavours on this plate felt beautifully familiar. ❤️
As a chef, I love exploring where our foods connect, where they differ, and the histories behind the dishes we continue to cook today.
I acknowledge the Turrbal and Jagera peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the lands where I am visiting, and pay my respects to Elders past and present. 🖤💛❤️
Food carries history. Food carries culture. Food connects us. 👩🏽🍳🌺
