One of the things I love most about the w**e world is the places it takes you…

The best tasting rooms do not always have polished marble floors, and today’s adventure was a great example. I had the privilege of hosting a tasting of some of Australia’s finest w**es alongside outstanding international benchmarks for more than 100 members at this year’s Beefsteak and Burgundy Convention.

There were no winners or losers, but the tasting was a great reminder of just how proudly Australia’s best w**es stand alongside some of the world’s finest

The venue? A working banana packing shed in Mena Creek, Tropical North Queensland

Our next WSET Level 2 Award in W**es is just around the corner, kicking off this March in Cairns.

Delivered under the global framework of the W**e & Spirit Education Trust this course is designed for hospitality professionals, retailers and serious w**e enthusiasts who want structured knowledge and real confidence.

📅 Half-day recap and exam session on 22 March

📍 Red Beret Hotel

We cover production, key grape varieties and regions, food and w**e pairing, and structured tasting. It’s practical, commercially relevant and immediately useful whether you’re on the floor, buying for a list or simply wanting to understand what’s in your glass.

Across the two days you’ll taste more than 40 leading examples from across the w**e world.

Huge thanks to Chris Ford from Creative Claret for joining us today! Some of the team embarked on the WSET level 1 course to learn more about the wonderful world of w**e!!

Little known.
Grape Price developments in Australia and New Zealand compared to 2001 (current prices in local currency) have moved into opposite directions. In 2023, Australian grape prices were still 22% below their 2001 level; in New Zealand, prices rose to 67% above their 2001 level.

In Vinho Verde ! Feel very fortunate to have stayed at the extended in-laws family’s home Casa Da Varzea deep in Beiral in the center Vinho Verde country

Ignacio at 89 told me that his secrete to old age was the region's fantastic water and a couple glasses of Vinho Verde from the 🍷

Wonderful walking through some older vineyards still trained in the traditional granite Pergolas that keep air flowing and help restrain the areas fertile soils to concentrate flavor in the grapes 🍇

Alongside side grapes Ignacio also grows Apples , Kiwis, Chestnuts and all manner of vegetables
Valleys do not come more beautiful than this

Ignacio was kind enough to gift me with the “16 Castas” to get my get my Portuguese up to scratch 😋

After being graced with incredible weather on our departure there were a few growers queued up at the co-op who had gambled on one last day of sunshine …. Farming not for faint of heart 🚜
