After deciding not to go to Sydney Royal for various reasons, we had our last hurrah for this year’s show season at Moss Vale (14/3/26). Backing up with the same team a week after Braidwood Show, it was our first time entering Moss Vale, which involved a camp out with the cattle.
In the British Breeds, Hollyhill George won Junior Champion Bull, but it was Hollyhill Louisa’s time to shine, taking out Senior Champion Female, Grand Champion Female and edging out an Angus bull to win Supreme Exhibit.
We were gratified that the judge saw all we know to be great about Louisa - her wide, straight topline, her beautiful udder, her sound feet, her proven fertility - and could place those virtues above her more moderate frame score.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have quite the power to take out the Interbreed over the Limousin cow and calf.
Jess, one of our helpers at the show, took Black Stump Heidi into the ring for the Senior Paraders competition. Although they didn’t place, they both performed well amongst a strong class of students and their cattle.
Thank you to our helpers, Amylou and Jess.

Off to Braidwood on 7/3/26 with a slightly smaller team (no Veronica or Victory). Again the cattle did well, against a line up of Limousins, Herefords and Simmentals - but of course, the Speckles were the crowd favourites!
With a different age classification, Heidi was in the senior section, and she and Louisa took out Reserve Senior Champion Female and Senior Champion Female respectively.
Our helper, Kim, who had limited cattle experience prior to show day, led Nicholas in all his classes with Louisa like a pro! (And yes, this is the Kim who Kimmy, the dam of our identical twins in a previous post, is named after.)
Our reliable offsider, Dimitri, was also there to help.

It seems an age ago that we took the cattle to Berry (31/1/26) and Nowra (7/2/26) Shows. The team consisted of Hollyhill Louisa (and her second calf, Nicholas), Hollyhill Veronica, Hollyhill Fortune Teller, Black Stump Heidi, Hollyhill Victory and Hollyhill George (Louisa’s first calf from last year’s show season).
Thinking that Louisa and George would be our problematic entrants, they stood out from the others, who all had their foibles. However, the cattle did well at both shows and we came home with many ribbons and prizes.
At Berry in the British Breeds: Reserve Senior Champion Female with Louisa, Reserve Junior Champion Bull with George, and Senior Champion Bull with Victory.
At Nowra: Senior Champion Female with Louisa, Junior Champion Bull with George, and Senior and Grand Champion Bull with Victory.
Hollyhill was also awarded Most Successful Beef Exhibitor at Nowra Show for the third year in a row.
Thanks go to Dimitri, Blake, Lochie, Amylou and Sandra for their help prior to, and on show days.

It seems that we mostly write about shows and sales, so here is a feel good story before we post our show results.
A couple of weeks ago, one of our favourite commercial first calf heifers, Kimmy (named after our middle son’s mother-in-law), gave birth to what appear to be identical twins. You be the judge! So of course, we had to name the calves after our daughter-in-law and her sister. Welcome to the world, Sophie and Ally!

Finally some normality creeping back after such a big weekend and I am able to report that the top price bull was Lot 31 Black Stump L275 Urban Cowboy BLK U24 fetching $8500, weighing 874 kg, 10 of the 20 bulls sold to an average of $4500 and 19 of the 24 females sold to a top of $6000 and an average of $4500. Thank you so much to everyone who bought cattle or had a bid. Thanks also to those who attended our Bull Walk and Dinner, you made it a terrific event. Thank you to the generous people who donated the prizes, Gerard Walsh and Carolyn Murphy for donating the heifer, Alex Pateman for preparing and breaking in the heifer, Jesskah's Rope Tack for the terrific halter set that went with the heifer and Worthwhile stud for donating the leather GW Squires show halter. The heifer was won by Graham Coddington of Chelsea Park, Merriwa, who also purchased heifers on the day.
See you again next year!
